My friend is looking to upgrade to a Z10 and the customer service agent on the phone insisted she could keep her old email only plan and that it would still work (no data just email). He even confirmed with his supervisor that it would work properly.

    This is Not correct right?

If they let you buy it on that plan, then yes. BlackBerry 10 devices do not *require* BIS / BES plans from a technical standpoint. Carriers make the decisions on which plans they *allow* for BlackBerry 10 devices based on marketing reasons. Some carriers have announced plans to continue charging extra for BES access.

Pretty much all that BlackBerry 10 needs is an open (read necessary ports NOT blocked) data pipe. That's why it will work on most people's Wifi connections. If your friend is accustomed to data-only, it will work for him AND he'll gain BBM Video and BBM Voice.

Thanks but actually it won't work it doesn't have the open ports like you mentioned . It's not whether they allow it or not. It just won't work. If she puts her SIM in any other phone (android, iPhone, etc) it just doesn't work. Same would happen on a Z10.

But anyways we got them to upgrade her to a 1GB data plan for the same cost.

OK. Too bad Rogers cripples its BlackBerry data-only plan. That's a decision coming from the network, not BlackBerry's decision.

Glad it worked out for you and your friend and that she was able to get a fully-featured plan at the same price.

    Good luck.

Yep Rogers used to have BlackBerry email only & blackberry Facebook only plans, but with the new BlackBerrys those are gone. But she's much better off with a full data plan. A Z10 with email only would have been a waste anyways.
