Try a hard reset by holding your power button for thirty sec or until you see the blue loading circle.

No you don't do a back up. It does nothing to your data.

    Hard Reset
Sometimes a battery pull just won’t fix the problem. In these cases, it’s time to do a hard reset on the phone. Warning: All data will be lost from the phone when performing a hard reset. We recommend taking regular backups of your data.

A hard reset is like a battery pull it does not need a back up of any sort, you should not do battery pulls on these devices.
You only lose your data if you do a security wipe.

Battery pulls are for the older devices , the new BB10 you should do the hared reset, the stl100-1 is the only one you use the power button the rest of the models you use the volume keys up and down held in for 30 secs until you see the blue loading circle.
