    Please go to: http://www.auby.no/files/video_tests/

And download the test file Planet (http://www.auby.no/files/video_tests...ubs_planet.mkv) or Plant2 (http://www.auby.no/files/video_tests...ac3_planet.mp4) directly to your phone. When it is downloaded, try to play it with the default video player of the phone.

If you are able to play it instead of getting the below message, then I wish I knew what's so special about your phone:

I convert all my video with freeware " freemake video converter" available on snapfiles. Convert everything to mp4 and plays flawlessly on my Z - audio and video. I am on the 2009 leak. Plenty of codec packages (containers) out there so you can take full advantage of the Z's multimedia capabilities. Just like on my PC - I always load the latest and greatest codec packages.

That's kinda the point though... why do I want to spend time encoding something when it worked perfectly fine before? Everyone knows you CAN encode it to make it work, I just don't want to have to do so.

OS 10.1 removed support for AC3-img_00000538.png

Worked ! Seriously you made me doubt a bit.

But wasn't it the Q10 only that didn't get AC3 support?

Probably because the Q10 was released with 10.1 so it never had AC3 support, on the Z10 they'll have to bring it back to avoid a class action suit from users that lost the feature after purchasing the phone, similar to when Sony removed Linux from the PS3...

Ya, how'd that work out for end-users? lol.

Yes - you are right. I am a creature of habit and have long endured encoding audio/video on my 2011 edition playbook. Had to learn how to encode my Sony HD cam to playback videos.

I just due it on the laptop and no big deal for me. Native support coming back would be awesome. I don't have music only files stored on the Z at the moment however.

Hopefully the CB community with all its clout will be impactful.

MKV with ac3 was the last of the few z10 things it had going for it, because of the hdmi output.

I'm am not happy with blackberry.

What a strange policy. When I see that I feel like it's even more clear that they are doing this as a cost-cutting measure.

I should have added - that revelation certainly doesn't take the wind out of the sails of the Netflix CEO who so many CB'ers took to task (including a headline story on the front page of Crackberry) when he asserted in a recent interview that Blackberry 10 devices (paraphrased) "weren't made for multimedia".

The folks at BlackBerry should do the same you can do with the raspberry pi, which is the ability to buy codecs and install them in the system.

Seems unless someone else with 10.1 that can play that file, you will be the only one that can.

Are you on official 10.1 or leaked 10.1?

MKV is a container, and AC3 is a compression method that requires a compatible AC3 codec to play back. Most often, MKV will contain audio compressed with AC3. As of OS 10.1 BlackBerry has removed the support for this critical and most widely used codec and therefore most common MKV files that contain AC3 will no longer play back on BB10 devices.

    Posted via CB10
Critical - how? (or just to you and a few others in this thread?)
Most Widely used Codec - where?
^ I think AAC is more widely used in various video containers than AC3, or am I wrong?

Does anyone know if MKV was originally stated as being supported in BB10 at launch? Or at any time?

    I only see:
    http://btsc.webapps.blackberry.com/b...ListHelperImpl

KB26606-Supported file types when using Bridge Files on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet

^ both of which mention the PlayBook.

I just want all codecs to be supported so I can play any media file on my phone or that may be streamed from my computer. Once I have seamless streaming and I can drag and drop files to my phone and have it work, well I'll be a very happy individual. Let's hope BlackBerry fixes this short-sightedness and get back to moving forward.

I think I might have a theory. All official 10.1 firmware can play AC3.

But leaked 10.1 firmware can not.

Since the leaked firmwares are basically not final, and are for testing purposes, there is no need to add the 0.50 license fee for AC3 playback in BlackBerry's logic.

Only when they are ready to build a final firmware for release will they pay the 0.50 license to add the code in.

Anyhoo, that's just my theory *shrug*

For me, if this is true, I think I will have to go on not being able to watch movies with AC3 on the Z10 because I think I will always be on a leaked firmware

BTW, what is slow to you? Took me less then 5min to get the 100mb file. That can't be the criteria for the world's slowest website?

Can you try playing that outside of the browser using the video app? I actually have no explanation for it...unless the browser is using different codecs. For me on Bell the videos stopped playing after installing 10.1. Every 10.1 leak has been the same too so that did not help.

Some are, but they are terribly inefficient. KalemSoft can only get 2.5 hours of continuous playback compared to the native video player that can get almost 9.5 hours of continuous playback.

Thanks for the device update ... pretty widely used though for the codec container is not enough. How "widely" used is it ... especially in mobile devices? I still stand by AAC being more widely used across all platforms (PC/Mac, iOS/Android/BB10/WP7 or 8/etc) vs AC3.

The only place I've really seen MKV widely used is via bittorrent movies. Come to think about it I've not seen it used as a container for video/audio anywhere else. Then again that just maybe my ignorance.

So people are complaining that they don't have code support on leaked software? Then they jump to the conclusion that it's not something to do with the leak, but that BlackBerry has dropped support?

    Stay classy.
