I don't know if it's just me, but there have been several times where my Z10 goes into silent mode by itself(I believe). I usually have it either on normal or vibrate, never ever set it to silent and there have been several cases when I check my phone, see the notification LED going off, and find out it's on silent. Not sure how this is happening. I use an OEM holster and a lot of times when I pull the Z10 out, I'm constantly hitting the volume buttons up or down. Would this cause the notifications to go into silent mode? How else would it go into silent without me changing this in the options?

This "feature" can also be accidentally caused by the operator turning the volume all the way down. That point where your get a little vibration, that's the phone toggling into silent mode. Pull down the setting on the home screen, and run the volume all the way down and watch the notifications change to silent.
