When I make or receive phone calls I cannot be heard. Speaker phone works and so do headphones, but regular usage fails.

Same boat here, although it works occasionally. I've been using a bluetooth for the calls I can't put on speaker phone.

Mine gave up the ghost when I updated to 2634 and hasn't worked since. So now I have to get me a Z30 or a Passport, heck maybe even both

Probably hardware. Diagnose with BBVE, and try cleaning it out. If that fails, you'll have to replace the bezel on your Z10 (I *think*). I had that issue on my Q10.

It will be a microphone issue, I had the same problem. The Z10 is great that anyone who can fiddle with mechanical things, can generally fix it.
There are plenty of teardown instructions on the net, ifixit, etc. I got a spare microphone / ribbon cable assembly off the 'bay for around �10 and it took me less than 30 min's to swap it out.

Definitely the microphone. The reason the phone works on speakerphone is the multiple microphones pick up the sound. I had it happen a year ago and used Bluetooth until it got fixed.
