    Current provider OS 10.2

Mic stopped working on handset but works on speakerphone. Turned off and on the phone plus hard resets... anyone else see this?

Download Blackberry Virtual Expert (it may be included in newer versions of the OS). It contains a series of tests.

I did the test.. mic failed.

Probably a hardware failure. You have rebooted (see below). You could try reloading the OS or trying a different one.

Also, try pressing the phone in various places and see if that causes any change

    Try a restart:

Press and HOLD both Vol Up/Down buttons. Keep holding while the screen goes fully black (ignore the screenshot), keep holding through the Black/White logo and when the Colored Logo shows up, release those buttons.

If you have the STL100-1 variant the volume button reset method doesn't work. In that case, Press and HOLD the Power On Button until you see the LOGO as above

Mind if I call you Donald?

    How new is your phone?

To me it sounds like it's an old mic, Donald.

Weirdest post ever. But yes phone is 15months new. It's not old, I'm on a standard 3 year plan...

Seriously though, why would the mic work on speakerphone, is it a different mic?

I believe that there are two different microphones from what I've read. But the diagram in the pdf file only shows the one at the front bottom.

Ah, a link showing mic at bottom and along top edge

There's one of the top beside the power button, it's mainly the noise cancellation and video, I think..

Yes I knew about the one on the top which doesn't get checked in BlackBerry's own virtual tests. Hmmmm.. If there was a 10.3leak I'd try reloading software.

Top mic is use when in speaker phone mode.

It switches to the lower mouth pc. mic in normal phone mode.

    Just call a phone.
Blow in the bottom mic then the top.

    Turn on speaker phone.
Blow in each again. The change is clear.

I have the same problem as you, the replacement part is only $2 but shipping from China is $20, still a worthwhile price if you ask me. It's easy to replace on your own too.

I just replaced my screen in about 10-12 mins, and the mic replacement is less steps than the screen, it will probably take about 6 mins.

I'm in Vancouver, Canada. Z10STL100-3/10.2.1.2947. I had a similar issue with the mic becoming very muted. It cost me $6 for a new mic and $50 base labour to get a local repair shop to fix it. Didn't help... had the tech take it apart again to clear out the mic opening. that did the trick. Definitely should have been the first thing he looked at... but wasn't. It's a small aperture and easy to get clogged. If you're hearing sound but muffled this may be your culprit. Mine works like new again.

I ended up bringing it to a kiosk in the mall.... he didn't have the part.... he was nice enough to open a brand new Z10 out of the box... take the mix out and put it in mine.... all for, 40 bucks plus tax... done in 45 mins

Is it possible to clean it without taking it apart - maybe by blowing compressed air or rubbing with tooth brish. How many months old your phone was?
