Map makes Z10 a nice GPS device!! impressed
I and some iphone users are very impressed with the Z10 map. You can use it as a very functional GPS device. It give you turn by turn voice command and the UI is great. This is a great surprise and nice feature.

I was pretty impressed with navigation as well. I'm still using Google maps on the browser for some things, but the stock maps actually isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I like that BlackBerry is planning everything long term by making their own maps apps instead of waiting years like apple did. I have no doubt that BlackBerry will continue to improve the maps app further in future updates

Is BlackBerry Maps able to display streets in Sweden? I'm trying to get in to work here and all it shows is the waterways in the area. It doesn't recognize any of the street names i type in either. For example, searching for Stockholm shows a bunch of roads in the United States.
Checked London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam: they all exist. But not Stockholm for some reason. Not even Malm for that matter, and that's the home of The Astonishing Tribe!

Does Google map give you GPS device like experience? Does it have voice commands? I have not used Google maps much. Z10 gives you nice GPS-device like experience when you start navigation.

So I ran into an issue last time I was using Nav. While the phone was giving me directions I tried switching tasks to quickly check my email. The phone started behaving oddly, the interface was very laggy and the sound started stuttering. As soon as I closed the NAV app everything went back to normal. I've since tried to reproduce the issue but it worked fine after that.
What really surprised me was the fact that the QNX kernel somehow allowed one app to monopolize resources like that, I thought that was the whole point of going with QNX. Has anyone else experience this? - 02-10-2013, 10:26 AM #9
Hopefully that will be in the next OS update. Try to let TAT know. They will probably speak to BB about it.
Yes, Google maps is, in my opinion, the best navigation solution in existence. It does have navigation, voice commands, "GPS-device like view." Having said that, using google to search for things in the browser and using the BB maps navigation is a very reasonable alternative. I'm sure BB maps will get much better in future updates, and if BB10 is popular enough, Google might release their mapping solution for it too
That's odd. Never had that happen, and I've done that many times. - 02-10-2013, 10:32 AM #10
Google maps can do what BlackBerry map can and then more - like street view for instance and local layers.
And extensive globe coverage by Google maps makes our maps look kiddo.
There are a lot of places missing.

QNX has hard limits for shared memory, combine that and if the developer changed thread priority in an app, that might cause an issue. Hard to guess though, could be a poor implementation of semaphore/mutex locks or you just reached the limits at that particular point in time.

The voice navigation is great!
Does anyone know who support the Map data? If the Map is not correct for newly developed areas, can we provide feedback to the provider? - 02-10-2013, 10:58 AM #14
I've used the BlackBerry nav feature around 4 times since I bought the device. The voice nav works very well, and it even does a good job of pronouncing the French streets in Montreal. What it doesn't do well is load the map tiles well when panning around the map. It takes a long time to load and sometimes doesn't even load the tiles completely. Does this happen to other people?

Yeah, the reason for that is that the map doesn't precache anything (from what I've read). Most map applications will actually store all the areas you've looked at on the map until a certain memory limit is reached, and that's why they load so fast. It is rumored that the next version of maps will precache to improve performance, however, that is just a rumor.

By the way, there is an app in BB World called "Maps Search Free" (free version), and it's paid version "GPS Maps for Google Maps" which allows full Google Maps access for streetview, directions (including transit), and even navigation in the paid version. Has anyone tried it yet?

You can find the docs, but of course what we have is a dumbed down version of QNX nowhere close to what runs power plants. It is more stable than let say Android, but it can and will get locked at times as it is customised version with many things simplified /changed. It is almost just a custom kernel.

I do like the BB map Feature as well on my Z10. I used the voice navigation several times and on a drive from Toronto to Pittsburgh and it worked very well.

Blackberry Z10 maps
Might be great for a car but what about those of us in London and Europe who use predominantly public transport and walking to get around? Google Maps on my BB Torch was great for this but it doesn't seem to be available on the Z10?
