How does this affect a warranty, as I have seen mentioned here?

It does not affect Warranty. You can purchase unlocked phones directly from BlackBerry in many places. The lock simply ties you to a carrier and, for a fee, even they will unlock it for you.

The choice is to pay a fee to your Carrier or to an unlocking service but it's just a special password and does not mechanically alter your phone

I wish I could find a free service to get my Z10 done.

What info about my phone would they need in order to get the unlock code? If they turn out to be shady what can they do with that info?

I had unlocked my cell phone at a small cell store. After using it successfully in Europe my z10 fried on me. Came back and Bell replaced it. However I guess I have to pay to unlock this new replacement again correct??

Just what happened to me this trip to Kazakhstan. I have not paid for my phone in full, BTW, but I think if they see you are a long term customer -- or if they just got laid -- they'll give it to you free anyway. My phone's unlocked, but really just needed wifi-calling to keep in touch with home base.

Ask your carrier to unlock it for you. Just tell them you are going on a trip...

Yup! Of course because the GSM side is primarily for non-domestic use. Don't think they're worried about you jumping ship to a domestic GSM provider!
