The new Qualcomm S800 SoC will be on phones and tablets this summer (hopefully BB). This chip will record and play 4K video! That's 4 x 1080p. That's 12 megapixel images at 30 frames per second. That phone is going to need more than a 16, 32, 64, 128 removeable card.....memory will probably have to be built to achieve required speed.

Ok, not to nitpick but seriously, who needs a PHONE with 4k capabilities at this point in time? 4k tv's aren't even in market yet, and even still, when they do come out, they will be extremely high end.

This thread is about memory.....just saying the technology is forcing a move away from removable memory cards.

LMAO! The answer would not get flamed.

I'm sworn to secrecy. RIM has managed this launch well. I wouldn't want to be a spoiler.

64GB Micro-SDXC works. I'm hoping that this portends well for future capacity increases - like 128GB, 512GB, etc.

exFAT formatting doesn't work. It has to be FAT32.

The main limitation of FAT32 is that you cannot have any files larger than 4GB. Bad move in my opinion. They need to get exFAT support baked in to the OS if they want this platform to have the legs to go the distance.

Otherwise, its nice to have the 64GB capacity. AFAIK, this is the only 4" flagship class device with mSDXC, and thus the only one with 64GB capability.

I don't know what you mean bad move on their part for files larger than 4gb. That is the limit by industry standards. Like Windows and Linux and other OS'S. If you have a computer with 4+gb on it and using a 32 bit OS you will only see and be able to use 3.5gb give or take, that's why you have 64 bit os's. It's the limitation of the system not set by BlackBerry or anyone else.If you are talking about bad move by BlackBerry not using a file system that allows for bigger files then yes it is a downfall per say

You are confusing system memory size and max file size. While 32bit systems definitely can't handle 4+ gb of system memory, maximum file size is the matter of file system and isn't related to architecture of the OS. That's why you can use up to 16TB files with NTFS-formatted storage, not matter which OS you connected this storage to.
    So hrrmph is right.

I think for the * most* part this is right. However I think there are ways around addressing more than 3GB of ram if the OS supports it - although each process is limited to the 32bit memory limit. Google for "Physical address extensions".

That being said, I don't know how relevant this is to mobiles

I just read the help write up on my Z10 regarding MicroSD Cards. It says that you can use cards up to 64GB. But, if you use cards larger than 32GB they have to be formatted to FAT 32 standard. Which says you can do on your phone and it gives instructions on how to do it. I'm assuming that the same would apply to the Q10. I'm currently using the 8GB card I had in my BlackBerry Storm 9530. I'm going to get a bigger card when I have a bit of extra $$ burning a hole in my pocket.

BlackBerry says only up to and including 64GB cards. You are asking for trouble by going higher.
