I wager the gray boxes are a preemptive measure against Apple's "rounded corners" patent... Cisco, Bloomberg, Box, Citrix, HP, and "SalesNOW" (Salesforce.com?) better watch out! The gray tiles aren't square with rounded corners, so they're not infringing, but all those app icons are... uuhhh oooohhhh...

Maybe one day there will be different themes that allow you to change the colour or even set the colour of your favourite apps, or set the colour by "category"... all the "finance" ones have green tiles, games are blue, travel are green, communications are red. That would be a nice human factors customization option.
