BlackBerry 10 Screen Resolution is Better than iPhone 5 - N4BB

In today�s keynote from Apple, where they announced the new iPhone 5, the company revealed the screen resolution. Despite the iPhone 5′s screen being a �retina display� it will only support 1136 x 640 at 326PPI.

In case you weren�t already aware, we wanted to reiterate the fact that the first BlackBerry 10 all-touch device (L-Series) will sport a significantly higher screen resolution than the iPhone 5. The L-Series will have a screen resolution of 1280 x 768 with 356PPI.

Eventually, RIM plans to have their all-touch devices sport a 1280 x 720 resolution, which will help thwart fragmentation for apps across the L and N-Series. While it is debatable if your eyes can actually tell the difference between the two (L-Series screen versus iPhone 5′s retina display), one thing remains true. As pointed out in our opinion piece, most HD content is available at 720p. The iPhone 5 will not be able to display it proportionally, unlike the BlackBerry 10 all-touch device(s).

I haven't had a problem with HD content on the Playbook with only 1024x600 resolution, so the iPhone 5 res, while it is a drawback, isn't quite as big of one as is being made out.

Yeah, while not an iPhone fan myself, the article misrepresents the idea of HD content. The iPhone 5 display is almost right at the HD proportions of 1.78:1. That's what counts. Yes, there's a bit of scaling down involved - something the new BBs won't have to do (at least for native 720p content) - so that's something. However, displaying it "proportionally" won't be a problem for the iPhone. And, any decent media player will letterbox or pillerbox as needed anyway for the varying video ratios out there - at least they are supposed to.

But then, most real videophiles don't consider 720p to be "real" HD anyway - much like HSPA+ isn't "real" 4G. But that's another discussion.

Hello, I don't know too much about screen resolution so I searched and thought I would post my question here. With the first bb10, the L series being 1280x768, what are the implications when the next round of full touch blackberrys have the 1280x720? Is there any negative things, or apps I may download that will not work on my next blackberry after the first L series? Or will everything be fine. Thanks!

1280x768 is reffered as 720p, the 1280x720 res is probably a typo.

there is no typo. The first L series device will have a 1280x768 screen. THe rest will be 1280x720. That's just how it went down at rim. Don't know why or how... or even how it will impact the apps on the first device.

It shouldn't make that big of a problem.

They'd just have to design apps for 720x720. Then 1280x720 and 1280x768. It's just 48 pixels. 24 on the left and right. So they can either put black bars or whatever. Not that big of a difference.

So it's unified the resolutions and made it easier. Also 1280x720 is 16:9 that which movies use. For 1280x768, it has to be scaled.

I'm glad they went with that decision.

I've seen it reported multiple times that they will be moving to 1280x720 rather than using 1280x768, further supported by using a resolution of 720x720 for the N-series. It does seem odd though, they could just use and stick to 1280x768 for everything, unless 768x768 screens are hard to come by. That's the only good reason I can think of that they would make that decision.

In all likelihood, since this has been announced, most apps will be written for 1280x720 and you'll have slight letterboxing in portrait mode.

Sure it has more DPI, but that is not a real big deal, when you consider other factors such as image contrast, readability in high ambient light, and colour accuracy. DisplayMate analysed the iPhone 5 screen and it is the best screen on the market.

It may possibly be the best screen on the market right now...but that doesn't mean that the BB screen won't be better than the iphone 5 screen when it is released.
