    Hi
I had the same problem and just figured it out.

You need to add you gmail account manually. From the home screen, swipe down >system settings>accounts>add account>advanced>microsoft activeSync
and set your gmail account up as an active sync account. Make sure you turn on sync email, sync contacts, sync calendar.

Then it will pull in all your gmail contacts. The default set up when you choose to add a "gmail" account sets it up as an imap account, which is why it doesn't pull in your contacts.
Once you manually set it up as an activesync account it works fine. Once you do that delete the gmail imap account if you had set one up.

Below is the link to the correct settings for gmail on ActiveSync

    Thanks,
    Jackie

I thought Google has discontinued Active Sync from Jan 30 for new accounts?

They extended it through July I believe.

The extension to June is for Windows8 phone only.
