I tried to enter my password but it said it was incorrect so tried a variation - I am now at last attempt of 6 available after which it threatens to wipe my data if my attempt fails - including precious family photos and videos which are not backed up. Is there anyway to avoid this happening?

The only way to avoid a wipe is to enter the correct password. Of photos are on an unencrypted SD card they may be retrieved on a computer. A security wipe affects only the phone.

As it happens I have been able to get another four password attempts by getting my administrator to change my profile from the 6 set as standard to the maximum 10 attempts possible on my Blackberry. With the extra attempts I was able to enter the correct password and recover my photos and videos. Perhaps a lesson here for administrators of company Blackberries to set a standard limit below the maximum so that in emergency the limit can be changed to allow a user more attempts if they have a problem with their password. The other lesson is to perform periodic backups of unique data. Well, also, to remember your password. BB is quite serious about erasing data on the phone if the password canNOT be entered correctly.
