I'm trying to stream TuneIn radio to my car stereo system but my car has no cassette, just cd player and radio (not even an aux port). So I'm in the market for an FM transmitter, preferably one that isn't cigarette charged as I have my premium car charger already in there.

General thoughts on good FM transmitters for BBRY and maybe suggestions for the Z10?

    Cheers!

Actually, I just found the BlackBerry OEM Bluetooth handsfree device for, like, $20 in Staples clearance bin, and I got one for my wife. One of the cooler features is it WILL stream audio to your FM radio...

Could you please send a picture and maybe a SKU/USG of the item please?

I've always used the vm-605 made by BlackBerry.
    - uses the same micro usb charger
    - I stream podcasts all day from my phone. Find the battery on the transmitter lasts a long time.
    - also works to take calls - I assume most do but it's very seamless. Reads the incoming number ti you so no need to touch your phone.

The VM 605 says it will shut off one minute after an audio file has stopped. How does that work for an app like TuneIn ?

Yes, the vm605 is an fm transmitter, and that's the one I was talking about in my post above.

As for that one-minute timeout, that's after one minute of SILENCE. If you're streaming music, the device will keep going until 1 minute after you stop streaming.

Also, it has a built in battery, but charges off USB. Get a lighter plug with a couple of USB ports, use one for your phone and one for the vm605, and you're laughing. PLUS, you get handsfree to boot.

EDIT: and the sound quality is good, too. You can adjust the transmission frequency through the whole scale to find one that works in your area.

as mentioned after a min of silence the fm disconnects but the bluetooth portion is still connected to your phone if you are within range.
A simple press of a button on the side of the vm connects the fm again and your back in business. Im thinking it's a battery saving feature.

Just to add, I have the VM605 and sound quality is very good. I run all my media through it when driving. Will sometimes loose it's connection to the car stereo but it is simple enough to reconnect.

this kinda bothers me. I have usb ports in my car stereo, but apparently they are only designed to work with apple products. on the plus side, the usb port at least charges my phone.

Not really... for security purposes you don't want a broadcasting device integrated on your phone... any body with a radio could listen in if you forget to switch it off. I doubt BlackBerry will allow this feature.

If you have a Z10, you might need to go into the storage settings and turn on USB Mass Storage mode. With this on, if you plug your phone into the port your stereo should view it just like a big thumb drive.

I installed an aux port in my Honda, it fits in the cd changer port, then got a blackberry gateway. Works great and makes use of NFC!

Though FM transmitters are dandy and all, they decrease audio quality by a ton.

If you have an older car, switch out the stereo system and go to a pawn shop to find one that supports auxiliary cables. That way you can hook up anything with a headphone jack.

The newer cars come with aux connections too! Use them instead.
