Just putting my engineers hat on... Since the Z10 generates heat during normal operation, and more heat during higher loads like browsing or using the phone, would not a silicone, rubber or other skin/case act as an insulator and minimise the dissipation of heat?

Since the heat can't dissipate as well, would this not lead to shorter lifespan/battery life on the battery?

Then a metal case for you would suffice. It would dissipate the heat. Although now u might have problems with rf signals.

True, metal would dissipate heat better. A holster would probably be the best option for optimum battery life as the device is removed during operation.
