I will be travelling to Japan shortly.
I understand Blackberry 10 is not sold in Japan but I do not understand if my BB10 can roam in Japan.
I understand that to have BB 10 working, the local provider network should be suitable but it is not clear if
Japanese providers have made the relavant network works to accomodate BB10 roamers.

You can roam in japan. They support the hspa+ at 2100 mhz and the LTE too at 1800 mhz and 2600. Any stl-2 should have no problems to roam in japan.

I had to visit Okinawa for work for 6 weeks just recently. I added the international plan from AT&T which got me a whopping 15 minutes on (using Softpac? ) one of Okinawa's carriers. Without the international plan added, I managed to rack up $33 in just 9 minutes on their network. I have to say though, that I think you'd be better off not using the international plan, shutting off both voice and data and just buying hotspot from a local cell carrier. They sell them for around $60-100 (~10000 yen) a month depending on what type of plan you get. I got the unlimited for $100 and just skyped, and bbm'd (video/messaged) folks back home. It worked perfectly! I had pretty high expectations for the Z10 initially, and my trip to Okinawa with it completely affirmed my thoughts. But, that's just my opinion. In any case, have safe travels!

BlackBerry don't sell in Japan, doesn't mean z10 won't work. Just no Japanese characters.

Don't forget the free wifi card in Japan. You can get it in the airport.
