My friends bb7 died completely due to a swimming pool incident . He got a new z10 now and I was wondering if it was somehow possible to restore / load his old contacts and messages from an old blackberry desktop backup to the new z10 with blackberry link. ? A tall order I know.

I figured that as a last resort would be to find another legacy bb phone and restore onto that and then do the transfer with link properly, but that will mean extra time and etc..(and finding a person willing to lend us his phone for all that ) .

If you're using the same BB ID on both devices you should be able to restore the Backup you made from desktop software to the Z10 via Link. That's how we usually do it.

There is also another way. If he has made back ups with BlackBerry Protect, he can do a one time restore from that backup on his Z10. Just go to settings and click on BlackBerry Protect. There is an option to do just that on the bottom of the page. A lot more useful and reliable than BlackBerry Link, which may screw up sometimes.

Unfortunately he didn't do blackberry protect. I am wondering if his old Bbm contacts will be also transfered to the new bbm10 as the old Bbm was linked to the phone and not to blackberry id as it is now.

It Works with a old DM Backup and BB link i did it with a Curve to Q10 and Bold 9700 to Q10 switch over the Weekend, but after you bring it to the New phone you have to Open every contact and click edit on your New BB10 device to see all contact Infos like DR. Or Department... But it works

BBM data on OS7 is saved to the user's BlackBerry ID. So I think that should be fine. And I also think that BlackBerry Protect is backed up automatically. Why not your friend just try that first? If not, he can use BB Link. On his Z10, he can go to the setup page and click on device switch. There are steps on what to do there. Hope this helps.

His phone is dead, all that is left is a older backup that I made with blackberry desktop when I upgraded his software quite some re back.

Even though the phone is dead, maybe you can just trying plugging that phone in and see if BB desktop manager or BB link can read it. Worth a shot
