Blackberries have been known not to allow silencing of the camera for corporate security reasons, obviously being the business phone.
Now that BB10 Balance allows two profiles for each work and personal use, is there an option to turn off the camera sound in the personal use profile?

I REALLY wish they would add this. Silence the camera and screen shots. It's really annoying as of now. I don't care if it's for security reasons. If I want to take a screenshot of my screen, I should be able to do it quietly. Same goes for using the camera.

On the PlayBook, it is controlled by the volume.

There was a law proposed in the US in 2009 but was never passed. In some countries, it is illegal. South Korea has a law requiring the sound, IIRC.

In the previous versions of the alpha OS you can just turn down the volume. This would silent the shutter sound. Now this is not the case for the released Z10. The camera will make the shutter sound even if you mute the volume.

You will need a silent camera app if you want to take pics without the shutter sound. check BlackBerry World. We have an app called Private Camera which gives you the option to turn off the shutter sound and take picture without the viewfinder preview screen.

It is not illegal in Canada, and most other phones allow you to choose if you want the shutter sound. I know actual cameras that have this option as well.
There are a lot of situations where you don't want the shutter and corporate security reasons shouldn't impose the users to stick by their rules.

Here is the actual reason, per BlackBerry inside their SDK:

// RECORDING STARTS AND STOPS. NOTE THAT WHILE YOU MAY CHOOSE TO MUTE
// SUCH SOUNDS, YOU MUST ENSURE THAT YOUR APP ADHERES TO ALL LOCAL LAWS
// OF REGIONS WHERE IT IS DISTRIBUTED. FOR EXAMPLE, IT IS ILLEGAL TO
// MUTE OR MODIFY THE SHUTTER SOUND OF A CAMERA APPLICATION IN JAPAN OR
    // KOREA.

And yet another useless thread. ***** all you want, currently unless you use a third party app, the camera sound cannot be silenced.

I understand why the camera sound is there and I have no issue with it. But it drives me nuts that I get that sound when taking screen shots from my device screen. If the camera is not in use they should give us the ability to turn the sound off when taking screen shots.

I was sitting in the doctor's office last week reading the crackberry forums on my Z10. I couldn't read the information that another user posted in a picture. My vision isn't what it use to be so I took a screen shot of the post and zoomed in on the detail when I was able to view it as a picture on my device (zoom doesn't work in the CB app in the forums). I later looked up and a woman was grumbling to her husband that she thought I was taking pictures of her. I didn't even have the phone pointed in her direction but the sound was enough to pass her off. They were both giving me the stink eye...very uncomfortable situation!

Minor annoyance, but I still love my Z10!

Fyi. This is an old thread. I didn't want to dig up the discussion.

I just found those notes in the SDK and wanted to put them somewhere for folks for future reference
