Just received my z10 a few days ago and I noticed 4.5gb of it is filled with "Other Data" anyone else have this or is it just me. I was expecting maybe 13gb free but not 11...

Part of the 16GB is used by the operating system software and all the pre-installed applications. just like on your computer. So the 11 GB available storage for a fresh out of the box BlackBerry Z10 seems reasonable.

    16GB = 16Gigibits = 14.9 GigaBytes = 14.9GB
Just like any other phone, flash drive or storage device.

    ~1-2GB for the OS
~1GB for the recovery OS? (some devices have a separate partition to store recovery data in case you device get bricked

= ~ 12GB remaining. The rest might be stock photos, applications, emails, documents. or whatever else you might have on your device.

I just asked this in the SD card thread, you only have 11gb free and haven't added any new apps yet? My 16gb playbook had 14.7gb storage available for new apps and media files.
But you have probably updated your contacts, used some of the standard apps that may have downloaded some data like map tiles, etc.,( don't know if that would make 3gb though).

See that's the thing, I know how sizing works and how it gets used by the OS by how the **** does a MOBILE os use almost 5 GB??? This was the space used up when I first opened the box!

BlackBerry 10 is QNX. It's a different OS THEN the others. It has a few more pre installed apps and runs differently. Do a factory reset and see what happens.

I remember the space available when I first booted my Z10 being roughly the same (within about 500mb) of the space remaining when I first booted my Nexus 4 a while back...

Uh no! There are 8 bits in a Byte. 16 Gigabits = 2 GigaBytes (GB). The Z10 has 16 GigaBytes of data. Formatting is what is using up some of the space for that 14.9 GB number you are throwing out (I'm assuming this is what is showing up when someone connects to the PC and it shows up as drive), the OS and integrated apps are using the rest and why people see 11 GigaBytes left on the the device. My 256 GigaByte SSD on my Mac only has 250.66 GigaBytes of usable space.

You cant moan about space when they give you box and drop box and SD intergration.BOX and DROPBOX are preinstalled for a reason their not just their to make app icons looked filled wih apps .

That's because Macs (starting in 10.6) hardware vendors show the space in powers of 1000 (base 10) while other OS's, including mobile OS's show it in powers of 1024 (base 2)

Thus, 16/1024/1024/1024 = 14.9GB. Then from that 14.9, you have to take into account the OS, apps, etc., etc.

Thus, a 14.9GB windows hard drive will show up as 16GB on a Mac (and that's what it'll say on the box too). Both will hold the exact same amount of data and have the same amount of space. Just different math used to calculate it.

What in the world are you talking about. You and the other guy are going about this wrong.

There is 8 bits in a byte and 1Kilobyte = 1024 bytes. 1024Kilobyte (denoted as KB) in 1Megabyte(MB) and 1024MB in 1GB. When using a small second letter denotes a bit. So you divide by 8. Which is why your 5Mb internet download (if able to get 100 percent speed) only has a max theoretical speed of 640kilobytes per second. 5*1024=5120/8=640.

The reason your HD and playbook do not show full 16GB (or their rated capacity of 256GB or 3TB) is because of the way the companies calculate space. They all collaborated and decided its easier to calculate things if its even. So 1MB is calculated instead of 1024KB its 1000KB. So everything is based on 10 and easy.. So to calculate actual space in your storage you need to do some math. I'll put up the equation for the math peeps first. Others can read below to follow.

    (Capacity*10^9)/1024^3=actual size

That's the capacity of advertised capacity (in their base 1)0 bytes divided by actual size (in base 2) of 1GB in bytes.

Still with me. Let's go through it.

    (Capacity * 1000MB * 1000KB * 1000bytes) / Actual Gigabyte size in bytes=Actual storage capacity

    (16GB*1000*1000*1000)/(1024*1024*1024)= 14.90 and change.

So there you have it. 14.9GB usable

    64GB SD card now

    64*1000*1000*1000=64000000000

    64000000000/(1024*1024*1024)=59.6GB usable

If you're going to do a Terabyte. Then you need to do another 1000 to advertised capacity and another 1024 out for actual size. Now you can figure out how much space will be usable on your HD before you format it in windows.

    Hope that clears everything up.

    Edit:I accidently quoted wrong guy.

I did the samething. Just skipped all the steps in between. :P
My math teacher also says I should show intermediate steps as well, but it's just too tedious.

Is 4.5 GB really that much? Pre installed you have the OS plus the Android Player, Story Maker, the camera (with all of its features) the picture editor, the video editor, the browser, the hub, the calendar, the Facebook app, the twitter app, the picture/video/music viewers, BlackBerry World, remember, docs to go, voice control, weather, print to go, texting, BBM, maps, LinkedIn, Foursquare, newsstand, YouTube, keyboard, compass, calculator, file manager, Box, Dropbox, smart tags, games, the help docs, universal search, all of the default videos/documents/pictures/etc, and code stacks for it to be able to use BlueTooth, LTE, HSPA+, and older networks, and WiFi. Am I missing anything? All of this can easily be 4.5 GB, especially since it's all optimized to be smooth and efficient.

It's how FunktastickLucky is saying. Nowadays SD cards etc are all calculated with 1000 and not the original 1024 bytes. Therefor a 16GB memory is effective 14,9GB. 10 Years ago this would not have been accepted by the public. Now it is always mentioned in small print. Allthough 11GB free is not much, but I assume that a full install, including apps, background pictures, music, demo movies, will take about 3GB of space.
