I do not believe that the torch has this functionality.

I downloaded a free app from app world once (I checked for it just now and couldn't find it), and it put an animated trippy swirling gif as my wallpaper.

However it looked very choppy and really affected the speed of my homescreen so I deleted it..

So maybe there is, but it definitely downgrade's your Torch's performance and doesn't even animate properly.

Battery wise it sucks...great, a flowing water theme just nice but then battery can't accept it and you will be drain out in no time.

Yes it is possible, and no it doesnt necessarily drain the battery any quicker then a static image. I currently have a theme I made with an animated gif for my torch and the battery lasts just as long. The problem with animated gifs is some will mess up on the torch:

Quote:
In a BlackBerry 6 layout for the BlackBerry Torch 9800 smartphone, an animated .gif image might not display on the device in portrait mode if you switch back and forth between portrait and landscape modes. (DT 862092)

Impact: The animated .gif image might not display in portrait mode.

Workaround: Avoid including an animated .gif image.
Their "work-around" is BS if you ask me....way to give up on the torch RIM. Not all animated gifs will do this, its unpredictable which will until you try them. But they really should fix this and not just ignore the issue since new models will be coming out.
