Do I need to insert a sim card when unlocking the phone once I get the code?

Yes, you do. it can work without it also on some device models but the best option is to follow all the safety instructions - turn off the radio, insert a SIM card and then insert the unlock code.

Finally got to unlock my BB Torch 9800 thru you, Blackberry-Unlocking. Thanks for your help. Very good price and very good service. They walked me thru the process thru their chat service. They also gave me a coupon that worked. So for $8.25, I was able to unlock my phone.
Highly recommended to unlock your blackberry phones.
