Default ATT Unlocking Service Charge?!?

I just called ATT and asked for the unlock code for my Pearl 8120. I told him that I was traveling over seas and wanted to use a local SIM card. He asked me for my IMEI number and within 2 minutes, gave me my unlock code. He then sent me the directions for unlocking the phone, which I have included below:

"hank you for choosing AT&T for your business wireless needs! This e-mail is a follow-up to our previous conversation on 6/29/2009 to ensure your needs were serviced correctly. On 6/29/2009, Bryan J. processed the following changes to your account:1. Other2. 1 Insert AT&T SIM card. 2 Power phone on and turn off the radio (Turn Wireless Off option) Very important. 3 Select Options and then Advanced Options. 4 Scroll down and select SIM Card. 5 Hold down the ALT key and type "MEPD" (multi-tap means this will be typed in "M" "ER" "OP" "OP" "DF")This does not display on screen. 6 Hold down the ALT key and type "MEP2" (multitap means this will be typed in "M" "ER" "OP" "OP" alt "TY")This does not display on screen. 7 Enter ! the Unlock Code. 8 Press Enter. 9 Reboot device. Device is now unlocked. Please allow 1-2 bill cycles for this transaction to reflect on your next bill and account summary. If you have further questions about your AT&T business needs, please refer to Enterprise Business Networks and Internet, Phone, and Data Solutions | AT&T[/url] or by calling us at (800) 331-0500.Sincerely,Bryan J. Business Markets Group (BMG) Customer Services(800) 331-0500"

"Please allow 1-2 bill cycles for this transaction to reflect on your next bill and account summary."

Does ATT apply any charges when providing an unlock code? or is that just standard text?

When I unlocked with T-Mobile (Curve 8320), there was no charge.

I can't see why they would charge you for it. In fact, with a million other lawsuits going on regarding phones being locked to 1 or 2 carriers, I think it'd be illegal for them to.

Contest them if they do charge you! Argghh!!!

How do I Google something?

I didn't get that email, but AT&T unlocked my phone a few weeks ago, with a quick phone call. No charges or anything.

Thanks for this post, I was wondering what to do when I have to travel out of the country in a bit. I am going to give it a try. Thanks!

Unlocking should be free unless you're doing it through a third party

I unlocked both of my BBs. They never gave me a speech, or E-mail, or anything. They did both of mine over the phone. Both calls were under 10 minutes, and there was no mention of charging me..

There is no charge for the unlock code. As far as I know, you just have to be an AT&T customer for 90 days, with an account that is in good standing.
