I was going to be a smart *** and say "the mic" but your question is a good one. I think you need to put your thumb over different openings on the phone and say "can you hear me now". Let us know the answer and how many dumb looks you get

I think the mic is the same whether it's in handset or speaker mode. I'm pretty sure the mic is the little hole on the bottom aligned with the "0" key.

Ditto. I usually hold it about three inches from my mouth.
