Ok... I'm stumped. I looked in the manual and can't find out what this funny looking symbol is on the upper right side of my screen. It kind of looks like a crosshair or a sideways square with a cross running through it... I'm sure this is a common symbol, but I'm new to the blackberrys...

    Thanks,

What is a sideways square all four sides are equal so a square cannot be sideways.....

If it is the one with rays coming out of it is the GPS

E911 is on by default, which means yes, that crosshair was there the second you turned on the phone.

"Location On" on the other hand (the little waves coming from the crosshair) was not on by default.

Mine was set as 911 only, had to enable location on. Either way, the 'crosshair' that the OP talks about was still present.

Why not? Location On just makes it so other apps can use the GPS and not only the E911 locator.

No difference in security or battery life.

    No it won't.

It's ALWAYS ON ANYWAY for E911 purposes. Changing the setting just allows other apps to use it as well.

The cross hair was always there, if you turned location on, the only difference is that there are little waves coming from it now.

Top right hand corner, home screen.

How much will it effect battery life? Are we talking like hour(s) of standby time or just barely noticeable?

IT WON'T EFFECT IT AT ALL.

I freaking hate it when people cause worries spouting wrong information .

If you leave it on you'll only get about as much battery life as "Phillies" spent looking at the manual, so zero.

Just for the post above, when you turned it on, and no cross hair showed up.

Are you using a custom theme?

I have used some themes and I do not see the crosshair.

If I revert back to a vendor theme it shows up.

    It truely isn't important.

    Just my expriences.
