My release day Tour had a slightly gritty trackball, I finally had to get a new one last week and it's very smooth. Now I can say on previous devices, you either had a smooth trackball or a gritty one...

I had the opposite SD. My initial tour was smooth and had a very "plastic" feel to it. It hardly depressed into the phone when "clicked" and it had tons of issues. (Moving to the left when I rolled the ball to the right and vice versa, unresponsiveness, and the whole works). My new ball, however, has a bit of texture too it---maybe what you lot have been calling a gritty feeling---and it has been wonderful. I could tell even before I first powered up the replacement device that this ball would be much better. It simply seemed to roll around better and had a nicer feel than the first.
Don't know what any of this means or if which makes the better ball?

It's preference really. This subject has been discussed here a few times, some people have a "gritty" trackball and some have a smooth one. They both work equally, and believe me when you have a bad trackball or one that is going bad, you'll know immediately...
If you want to get a replacement u can get a replacement or u can just get a little bit of rubbing alcohol and a q-tip and roll it around the trackball to clean it, it works wonders!!!
The few trackballs I've felt on the Tour felt fairly smooth with a 'buzz' feel as it was rolled. Felt like the rollers had more 'bite' than earlier models. But scrolled quite smoothly.
