Hey guys, I'm currently running the default OS (4.7.1.40) on my Verizon tour and I'm really starting to get concerned with how long the device takes to boot up after a battery pull or restart after uninstalling an app. I don't exactly remember how long this took when I first received the tour but I just did a battery pull to time how long it takes and it was about 6 minutes! I was wondering if this is normal for this device and what exactly is the blackberry doing that requires it to have such a long boot time. No other phone I've ever owned has taken this long and I've had two other blackberry devices. Any ideas on how to speed this up?

yes, it's normal. Mine takes about 4 minutes and that's pretty fast cause I don't have many apps installed.

yeah mine takes 5 or 6 minutes but i rarely shut the thing down so its not that big of a deal. I think one of the big improvements in 5.0 is the blackberry load screen - i think a lot of the problems with load time is that white screen....

Mine takes 6-7 min. Do the 5.0 beta's speed things up? If so, I'll be taking my first plunge into a leaked OS.

5-8 minutes is normal for these. It's really annoying and I think it's far too long.

My Tour takes about 7 minutes, too. It just seems crazy, because in the same amount of time, I can boot up my macbook, and get some email sent out, and still be waiting for the Tour.

I can shower, eat something, and brush my teeth...the Tour is still booting up.

I wonder if the Sprint Navi app has anything to do with it

    My point is...it blows

You guys with 5.0 say this hasn't been improved?

    Okay, here's been my experience:

I bought a Tour when they first came out--I don't usually buy a new model of anything when it first comes out. Always bugs me to be an unpaid beta tester.

Anyway, I loved everything about it, except the boot up time. 8 to 8 1/2 minutes. First time I switched it on after getting it in the mail, I was convinced it was broken.

So, I completely understand. But, my Tour now boots in about 3 1/2 minutes; a bit less time than it used to take my 8330 to boot up. Take what follows with a grain of salt, though you might need the whole shaker.

    Using 4.7.1.40 and .53, my 9630 took 8 to 8 1/2 minutes.

    I tried a 4.7.1.53/5.0.0.230 hybrid. The boot-up time was shorter, but I didn't measure it. I'd guess about 6 to 7 minutes.

I spent some time with the leaked 5.0.0.230. Boot up time had dropped to 4 to 5 minutes.

Unfortunately, then after about 3 months, my Tour developed a fatal case of trackball. I called VZW. I started to explain the problem. In the first sentence, I didn't even finish saying the word 'trackball'. The VZW tech said, "Oh, yeah. The trackball. We just received a memo on that a few weeks ago. Where do you want your new phone sent?"

So, the new one arrives, and I immediately dump 4.7 and install .230. The boot up time with .230 started at about 6 to 7 minutes. The next time I rebooted it after installing a new app, the boot up time had dropped to about 4 to 4 1/2 minutes. But it had an odd quirk--there would be very little memory loss for a day or three, then the phone would suddenly start lagging and losing 15 to 20mb. A reboot fixed it, temporarily.

Since I didn't have to reboot my 8330 constantly, I thought it might be time to try a hybrid. I was quite pleased with 5.0.0.230/.238. Boot up time settled a little under 4 minutes. It also seemed to fix the odd and sudden memory drain, and it was a bit smoother and quicker.

I'm now running 5.0.0.230/.238/.296. It's easily the best Blackberry OS I've used so far. 3 1/2 minute boot up and memory starts at 126mb, then stays at 121-124mb for days, even when I'm trying to work it to death, and battery life is improved over the .230.

Anyway, no one can guaranty how your device will respond to a hybrid. But, if it doesn't work for you, you can always go back to your old OS--or wait for the official rollout of 5.0 for the non-Storm Blackberries.

Thanks guys for the responses. I'm just glad to know its not something wrong with my phone specifically. I do think its a major issues with blackberry devices though. If RIM is going to make a product that is used by so many and and prides itself on doing something quick and easy the boot up time should be a little more manageable. If it ever came down to it and I needed to make an emergency call but had to restart my phone first (since a battery fell out) i'm in trouble
