If you are on a family plan and simply want a newer bb, do you have to pay full price (i.e. 4-500 to do the upgrade) if you are not due for an upgrade for a while? Or is it a reasonable price and you can simply buy a new one and transfer everything fairly easily? Verizon, btw

If there are no 1 or 2 year upgrades on any of the lines then you will need to pay full retail price for the phone. There are no discounts just because you're on a family plan.

Add another line and get the upgrade with a discount. It would only be $10, maybe, maybe not.

Good point, I'm thinking about this to get the 9650. The thing is that you won't save much money at all. Ex. To get the 9650 which is $150 with a 2 year plan. It would be 150 + (10*24months) = $390 Then add all the taxes and surcharges you get per line each month and it makes it the almost the same price as buying the phone full retail. It's of course spread out through 2 years which makes the cost seem less though.

If "simply want a newer bb" and "you are not due for an upgrade for a while", the "reasonable price" is full retail.
