Default Question about Upgrading?

So I'm hoping to upgrade to the TOUR using my Ladies "NE2" promotion. Her line is attached to my account and is eligible for an upgrade, but she doesn't really need a new phone (not much of a electronics/device freak as myself...and shes being so gracious knowing how much of BB Nut I am) so I was wondering If VZW is going to force me add a BB Data Plan to her line to get the "NE2" promotion price for the TOUR? I don't see why they would, or how they could considering she won't actually need it? I guess the problem that I'm seeing is that when they subsidize the price of the phone they force you into signing that line up for a BB Data Plan and expect to make there money back from the lower pricing of the phone by charging that line an extra 30+ dollars a month for data (and whatever else the CS rep try's to talk you into...). Im sure thats not the case, but I thought I'd ask my fellow CB.com members what the deal is, and if I might be running into a bump here? I even attempted to pre-order the phone using her account/number and it tells you that you must select one of the following:

Email and Web for BlackBerry® $29.99/month
Blackberry® Solution Unlimited Data Usage $44.99/month

I figure if I want to get the TOUR the way I want it (purchased through one line and set up for the alternate line that is on the same account) I will have to go into a retail location and buy it and explain what I want to do. This isn't something that can be done VIA online purchase?

Any insights would be great.

Ok question for you, you said her line is attached to your account.
So do you have a family plan or is it two seperate price plans on the same account?

On a family plan you can do an alternate upgrade and the data plan would go onto the line that the new phone is going on to.
If they are seperate price plans you'd essentially end up doing the same thing but it would probably be easier to go into the store and get help with it.
You could do it by doing the upgrade on that line, adding the data like it asks and then
doing *228, opt 3 on each line after you get the phone and then fixing the data on your online account, lol but like I said for most it is easier to just go into the store and do it all. And if your going to have them switch everything around on your phone lines it's always nice to have actually bought the device from them.

If I'm not mistaken its two seperate plans on one account. I ended up picking up her account/number when her parents forced her to either get her own line or have her account/number dropped because they were switching carriers (Her number was attached to a Family Plan with VZW). Either way, I can do what I was originally hoping to do correct? They aren't going to force me to add a BB Data plan to her account because I'm using it to get a phone I want at the "NE2" price?

Ok well I'm assuming from what you've said both the price plans are on your account then, even if they weren't it is all still doable. You will temporarily technically put the data plan on there but you'll do an esn change before really activating the BB on her line and you will then put the data plan on your line.
It is all very doable.

A vzw corp store makes it easier, but yes, you can upgrade her line to the tour, use the tour on your line and she keeps her existing phone.
I do this all the time.
You can do it online too,
in a nutshell, her phone gets swapped to your #,
your BB goes to her #,
Tour gets activated, your BB gets deactivated on her #,
Tour swaps to your #, her old phone swaps back to her #.
Whole process takes 10 minutes in a store, 30 and a couple beers on your home pc.
It is easier for me to do it at home due to the pin reassigning and transfer of the apps and backup files. Almost therapeutic....
If you want to do it yourself to get the instant rebates and activation waived, I wuld go ahead and set up an online account with vzw this week.

Not to be redundant, but since some of you are whizzes at this, can someone verify for me if this scenario will work in my situation? (Sorry, I'm desperate for a new berry because my Curve is malfunctioning and not eligible for an upgrade, and saving $ would be a good thing.)

(BTW, when I got a Storm, my first BB and smartphone, I was told by VZW I had to get the data plan added to my existing minutes plan.)

I have two lines under my account (my name): my phone on my plan, DH's phone on his plan. (It is not a Family Share plan.)
I have 450 minutes plan + data plan. I am not eligible for an upgrade.

DH has just the 450 minutes plan on a Moto dumb phone.
He is eligible for an upgrade.
He does not want or need a data plan (so if VZW forces it, this won't fly).

So are some of you saying I can get the Tour on his line, with all discount upgrades applied, then swap phones. So after swapping, I'd have the Tour assigned to my line and his old Moto goes back on his line?

And VZW won't grumble about this?

No. They won't grumble about that. You can easily do it yourself as well. fonebrkr's post applies to you too.

Thanks so much for this info and how-to instructions, there appears to be hope after all! (I was so dreading paying full retail.)

As far as I can see, the only drawback is that when DH needs to upgrade his phone he'll pay full retail. But it will still be a savings of a couple hundred $ since he uses only basic, construction-site friendly phones.

This is good news!
