You don't say where you are. Verizon is working normally on the East Coast of Florida. You're probably experiencing a local problem. Have you done a battery pull reboot? Have you moved to a different location to see if the problem is with the tower you are hitting?
The past couple days I had been getting a message that said "There is insufficient network coverage in your area.." I just tried alt-Rshift-del and it fixed the problem...
I'll warn you though you'll get slammed with all the bbm's and emails you've missed.
So I ended up trying the battery pull and got a huge wave of missed emails. I just feel stupid that I didn't do it earlier seeing that I'll yank that battery out whenever I feel my bb slow down even a little bit. I just wonder why it didn't connect since it was on all night on the charging dock.

I too have suddenly had this issue since upgrading to Verizon's Official 5.XXX software. I have in fact done 2 battery pulls in about a week. Hope it does not continue to be an issue.
