Newbie..why niagara & not storm?
Hey all you crackberries...please give me some excellent advice. I have never had a smart phone, but plan to convert soon. Why should I wait for the Niagara to come out (especially since it looks like no WIFI) instead of going ahead now and getting the Storm (especially with the buy 1 get 1 free offer)? Who prefers the buttons on the Curve/Bold to the virtual ones on the Storm? Many thanks!

Since you stated the 9630 having no Wi-Fi, I have to say the Storm doesn't have Wi-Fi either. Both are 3G, both are CDMA. So basically it's up to you on which one you want. Do you want to keep clicking a screen, yes it actually does click. Or do you want actual keys? - 03-26-2009, 09:38 PM #3
basically what blueberry said
the 9630 uses the Storm processor and internals..
you either want to deal with a touchscreen device or you want the physical qwerty keyboard
go read the storm rant and rave forum to see all the storm problems
based on the fact that the last 2 devices RIM released with a physical keyboard (9000 and 8900) are both pretty solid devices i would go with the 9630....i'm not you though so do some reading and make your choiceStupidity is a circumstance that can't be helped. ignorance is a choice - 03-26-2009, 09:45 PM #4
Yeah, but have you seen the video of the 9630 with .10 on it? Very, very buggy. And I don't think Verizon will wait long enough for a somewhat good OS to get to them. So they'll most likely rush it, have a crappy OS and then 2 weeks later do an official release. But there are always new OS(s) coming out.

I you never had a touchscreen phone before than go play around with the Storm at the store. After having the iPhone and Storm I found there are many disadvantages to having a full touchscreen phone. I personally can't wait to using actual keys again but there are people who like touchscreens, I thought I would. I don't think the OS matters too much because they will update them but the hardware you can't change once you have it.

thanks!
great input...I didn't really like the virtual keys on the storm when I tried it out, but I did like the bigger screen. However, it looks like you lose half of the screen anyway when your typing, so I'm not sure if the bigger screen is a big add. The Storm was slow in the store, and I'm hoping the Niagara might be faster. Plus, if you're touching your screen all the time, I'm sure it takes abuse and shows it over time, unlike the Curve/Bold/Niagara. I haven't heard anyone complain of hating their Bold, but lots seem to dislike the Storm and plan to switch to Niagara. I guess I'll wait for the Niagara then just get the updates as the bugs are worked out.
Thanks guys! - 03-27-2009, 02:07 PM #8
Personally, I think the Niagara has a lot of potential, but I'd like to see the Storm Slider

i love my storm, i type faster on my touchscreen than on any other phone my fingers are too big to navigate like the curves buttons, the touchscreen lights up where you are going to press before you click it in so its much easier. Its all about personal preference, however the screen is HUGE on the storm and beautiful, the storm is much faster if you upgrade to .113 and you have to realize in the store people are on running all the applications and just leaving them open so ofcourse the display models are going to run slow especially with the crappy original OS that its shipped with.
And yes you do lose half the screen when you type, but you type, then swipe ur finger downwards, and voila the keyboard is gone.
Best of luck with whatever choice you makeArmy of the 12 monkeys

The storm is a pretty phone.. it has an amazing screen with pretty good resolution and thats about it.. most people who will stick with their storm is because of the bigger screen, or they either have iphone envy... ( people who want a iphone but don't want to switch to At&t's horrible service ) so they settle for the Storm instead.
With that said.. go check the storm forum specifically herehttp://forums.crackberry.com/f133/ and you will see why most people don't care for their storm and rather get the 9630 instead. - 03-27-2009, 04:16 PM #11
LOL..
What about when you open the browser and try to click on a link BUT instead you start zooming..
What about when you need to move the cursor around while typing and you make a mistake / typo due to the horrible virtual, clickable, touchscreen? You don't have any arrow keys to move your curser around to edit it.. instead you gotta play touch the screen and hope you get in the right place.. sometimes just to make sure your typing the right letter you gotta angle the view of the phone some.. but UH OH!!!! now the screen changed from landscape to potrait.. and it won't move back! its frozen...
And in regards to the demo at the the store running a bunch of apps & slowing down the phones capability excuse is a bunch of crock... Those demo storms at your local Verizon store will perform EXACTLY like the new one you will get right out of the box {sluggish, lag, accelemoter not working like it should, etc. etc.}
All the demos I messed around with the curve had no issues when it first appeared at Att stores, t-mobile stores and when it finally arrived at Verizon stores whether it had a bunch of apps or not.
Good luck with your Storm..

I was obsessing over every day left until I could get my upgrade and get the Storm. I was sure those bugs and hassles everyone else talked about wouldn't bother me. So finally, I got it, but I didn't even keep it for a week. It was frustrating as heck to tap out a quick text message or even add a new contact. I literally had to do a battery pull within the first hour of having it in my possession, when ALL I had done was receive a test call from my husband.
I didn't want to upgrade to an unofficial OS because I didn't want the hassle of worrying about downgrading so it was returnable. But I think a new official OS may come out 3/31? Oh, and when I returned it, the only thing the tech looked at WAS which OS it was running.
So anyway, I returned the Storm and bought an 8330 off eBay so I could save my upgrade for the Niagara, thus putting all my eggs in the Niagara basket. Good luck, hope this helps.
