NEW OS will be a great update
So this device is perfect but with the new OS it can only be better. 5.0 is great on the S2 and other devices, this device will be amazing once it has that happen. At this point we know it is not RIM, so hurry up verizon and let this drop.

You can just download either 5.0.0.230 or 5.0.0.419 right now and enjoy the benefits of the new OS.

I want the official so if anything was to happen I don't have to downgrade back to exchange it

and before anyone bashes him and says ".419 is OFFICIAL" realize that he is waiting for his carrier to release

Lol I think noodle could fight his own battles! I'm just kidding. I don't see the reason to wait, takes an extra step to install it.

.419 rocks. I'm glad I didn't wait for an "official" OS. Its all about mind over matter, if you don't mind, then it don't matter.
Distributor of pain. - 01-24-2010, 04:45 PM #8
I love the 5.0.0.419 os. I'm not having any problems and everything works like it should. Even if you have to return it, it only takes a few minutes to go back to the old os.

I'm waiting too. Plus, I think Vzw 5 OS will be slightly higher than the .419.

I am waiting for the official carrier upgrade before I install it.

I think I'm gonna wait for VZW if they ever release it lol

I personally dont believe in the wait and see game. If it is out official from your carrier or not I am all for giving it a shot. It only takes 20 minutes to change the OS if it doesnt work out...but this is just my preference. Those waiting, hope it is worth the wait in the end, but you are missing out on a very good OS that is currently available.

I couldn't wait any longer for Vzw to officially release it so I went with the MTS link, theoretically the same as the leak, and with it, my boot time was slashed from ~12min to ~5-6min. Everything just sort of feels more responsive too. Lost the ability to tether with their software though.
So, I'm hoping they release an update for Vz access manager soon so that starts working.
I'm not counting on the Vzw release to be different than .419, and even if it is, a quick back-up, wipe and reload, and I'm running the new one in under an hour anyway.
Good luck to those waiting, you've got better patience than I do.

I would like to know exactly what makes OS 5.0.whatever so great. I keep hearing comments like "it's faster", and "it takes less time to boot up". I haven't found the speed of OS 4.7 to be at all bad. And I don't boot up my Tour all that often, so these speed "benefits" of OS 5 seem to be trivial. What would be great, IMO, is if reception improves. I've found that signal strength I'm my neighborhood is sketchy, alternating between 2 and 0 bars. It ticked me off that, during the summer, my sister-in-law's old Curve was getting 3 bars at the same time my new Tour could detect no signal, from the same provider. So, is there an improvement in reception with OS 5? That would definitely make an OS upgrade worthwhile.

I haven't spent that much time with OS 5.0 but I have two friends who recently got the Bold 2 9700 and let me tell you... its QUICK. At first, I was kind of doubtful about all the people on here proclaiming the speed of 5.0 but it really is fast. The phone was completely lag free while multitasking a bunch of apps. It didnt matter how many apps I opened or how hard I was trying to push the OS. The hour glass never showed. I didn't get a chance to restart it so I can't tell you how long boot up time will be.
I doubt OS5 will improve your reception. That's for sure. - 01-25-2010, 05:59 AM #16
I used 5.0 230 with no issues
I cracked my screen and got a new tour..
I haven't updated my OS ... Why?
4.7 works and I don't like threaded texting. It looks like an IM
U can't forward a Msgs from ur friends. You have to cut and paste the wording from the IM
and create a new sms which is annoying ... U should have the option of "turning off" threated messaging
4.7 works good... Same speed. Keep in mind ... I was just using 5.0
5.0 is prettier ... I'll give it that .... The bright Blue is awesome

I wiped my phone and did a clean install of mts .419. I have had no problems with it. Reception seems a bit better definitely seems less jumpy then the last 4.7 build fro Vzr.
I too had a great working phone on 4.7 and was reluctant to upgrade now that I have I have no desire to go back.
It is not so much that os 5 is very different it's just a lot of little things that add up to a better experience IMO.
Some of these are:
Cool neon blue cursor and accents
Faster Reboot
System speed while not remarkably faster does seem snappier. The feeling I get is that processes behind the scenes are running more efficiently and seem more stable therefore providing a smoother fron end experience. This of course is speculative but this is how it feels to me.
Ability to flag email for follow up is sweet
Option to turn on predictive text like the pearl had
Threaded SMS
Overall. A more polished feel to the OS
Clock face is now bigger and centered on screen better
Little interface tweaks like date entry looks more like storm now.
Of course it is all personal preference but one thing some of you have to realize is this. .419 is not some buggy alpha release it has been for me just as stable as the original OS and in many cases a lot more pleasing.
Keep in mind RIM releases OS versions the carriers just sign off on them, this means politics or sales not just technical concerns may delay a release through a particular carrier. While I can't speak to other carriers like sprint my phone on VZR has running .419 has been superb and I truly believe VZR is holding it back because of the imminent release of tour 2.
Just remember.if you do try it out to back up your data & your 3rd party apps then use jl_cmder to completely wipe your phone. Your finished product will be so much smoother and less prone to bugs.
Anyway just my 2 cents.

[QUOTE=noodle15;4551216]So this device is perfectQUOTE]
I have to assume with a brief scan of the topics in this forum that the above comment is meant sarcastically.
I love the idea of the Tour...if only it actually delivered. I'm continually amazed at the varied and abundant problems with this one homogenous device. It has all the problems of a windows/IBM based computer that has countless different hardware and software makers - I am having trouble understanding how a device with 1 hardware/OS maker can be so full of bugs and unending annoyances.
I'm hopeful that 5.0 will fix all kinds of unsolved problems for me...things like Today not working, custom alerts and ringtones randomly switching, frequent required battery pulls, really long boot times, disappointing battery life, poor reception and bad sound quality, a bunch of problems with 3rd party apps - primarily a weather app that actually works, dwindling memory over time, screen/keyboard illumination failing to work occasionally, desktop manager working with backups created without problem solving. I'd also like my MMS's to actually arrive - I don't know, maybe that's my carrier's fault. (It's baffling to me that this laundry list gets so long with just a moment's thought).
I'm ever hopeful. Crush my pessimism RIM! - 01-25-2010, 06:04 PM #21
