    I'd like to decipher the meaning of the little SMS I get when someone leaves a VM. The SMS says "1 NEW VMAIL 0 URG 0 FAX *86".

    I'm thinking 0 URG means it wasn't marked urgent and 0 FAX means someone didn't leave it as a FAX (but can they?).

    What does "*86" mean?

    I think the *86 stands for the voice mail if you dial that from ur phone it calls ur voice mail

    On this subject, is there any way to disable these notifications? The icon at the top is enough for me.

    i called verizon, you can't unless you disable your voicemail notifications totally...ugh

    I downloaded SMScrunch and I still get the icon on the top but no more annoying blurps come into the SMS inbox. That might work for the OP.
