    I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to. Is this an email or sms? Does the unknown symbol follow the message sending symbol, or is it before?

    That is the symbol showing your GPS location is on. Either an app has turned it on, you have enabled it in settings or you have recently made a 911 call. It is used to communicate your location to cell towers via GPS.

    Correct. In addition, if your GPS is turned off and you're using an app that requires the GPS to be turned on, the phone itself will enable the GPS (in most cases).
