    I'll answer this since this guy decided to spit some tech lingo then dip. To put it simply, if you're roaming, you can't do the *228 update. To know if you're on a VZW tower, go to manage connections, and your Mobile Network will say Verizon... Otherwise it will likely say Extended Network

    and really, it's smart to do *228 every month or so. I would do it before you travel outside of your home area, but really, there isn't a need to do it when you get home (unless you've been gone for a while). *228 updates your roaming list, or put simply, the towers your phone will use. New PRLs come out every so often (more frequently with the conversion), so really its best to make sure you have the most current PRL Version.
    And if you do travel, and havent done the *228 update in a while, but are already roaming before you remember, you can go into any Verizon store and they can manually push the new PRL Version into your phone...
