If you have a PC, you can use software from any carrier you want on your BB. It's just a matter of downloading it, running the ,exe file you downloaded and finding "vendor.xml" to delete. C:/program files/common files/research in motion/apploader/ is typically where to find that.
Then just run loader.exe after you've got vendor.xml eliminated and it should back up your files, install the new os, and restore your contacts/sms/all that fun stuff. I don't know if it backs up 3rd party apps or not as I never used paid ones so I never cared...
