So is there any way of doing this? I'm tired of having to go into my gmail to delete emails I have already read on my phone. When I hit reconcile on the phone it doesn't seem to change anything.

Nope. Can't be done, gmail just put out a gmail addon that you can download to your phone that will add some functionality, try that, maybe it will be something you can work with
