Gmail Problem with my Tour
Hey all,
First time poster here. I've run into an issue with email on my Tour and I'm hoping someone here has an idea how to fix this.
Please bear with me as I try to explain the situation:
My university email has just switched over to Gmail. Or at least, I now send/receive email through a Gmail webservice. My email is still name@university.ca but I go to through apps.universityname.ca to retrieve it.
I want to receive my email on my BB, as I've always done in with previous accounts, but all I get is "Unable to add account. Please check your information and try again."
So, I've tried creating it through the "gmail" and "other" email wizard options but neither works.
Google seems to have supplied info so that I can enter the settings myself. They gave me a server name imap.gmail.com and a port #. I tried entering the server name but I can't find a spot to use the port #. I also enabled Imap through my gmail but nothing seems to work.
The last thing I tried was to download the gmail app but that doesn't work either. While I have my university account, I can't log into the gmail app site to download the application.
I hope some of this makes sense to someone but I am totally confused. I really need to have access to this email and I can't seem to find someone in a similar position. I would be super grateful to anyone who can help me out, thanks in advance. - 04-28-2011, 10:30 AM #2
Exact same problem
I'm having the exact same problem with my curve and my university email. We used to go through outlook but now we just switched to gmail, my phone still thinks we're going through outlook and I can't figure out how to change it so my emails will actually come to my phone. Have you figured out how to fix it yet?

I am guessing this BlackBerry is your personal device NOT hooked up to a University BES acct?
If this is true and you have a BIS data plan there shopuld be no reason why you cannot go directly to google gmail and set up a personal email of your liking and set it up as an imap acct. setting which they prefer you to do since BB is really not supported google says. After you set this up and again presuming you have a personal BIS plan, you can then go to your carriers email setup on the internet or from your device and put in the email address you created and password. After that you will get an email icon on you BB along with an email that it has been set up. Try this if all else meets what I mentioned.Last edited by Jaguarr40; 04-29-2011 at 07:48 AM.

I also had that issue with my school email account. I contacted the school's IT department and was told that only BES users are able to get the school emails directly on their devices. My solution which was offered by the school IT department was to forward the school emails to another email account.

I had a similar situation as well. When I contacted my university's help desk, I was informed that they do not allow their e-mail to be setup on a mobile device. I'm assuming that somewhere in their e-mail system they can set it to only allow access on an internet browser.
