I'm under the impression that it's an alert for Blackberry App World.... but that, nor any of my other apps have a red asterisk on them indicating an alert, so I don't know what it is in reference to.

The logo is a black circle (silver outline) with a silver arrow pointing down and to the left (approximately to a "7" if comparing to a clock).

Probably something obvious, but I'm a newbie.....so please help!!

You have an update with AppWorld, have you updated the actual application itself yet?

I had an update in the "My World" section for one of the apps I had downloaded. I downloaded the update for that app, installed and rebooted, thinking that was the alert, but apparently it wasn't. I suppose you're probably right about needing to update the Blackberry App world application itself. How do I do that?

Sometimes it's a message from App World informing you of an update.

If updating the app doesn't work, try checking your messages folder.
