If I were to purchase a Tour from another source, let's say from Telus, and I have the phone unlocked, would I be able to browse and bbm (i have a data plan)?

One thing to keep in mind though. As others have told me, you would only be getting edge data speeds, which is like 2.5g.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC the Tour only supports 3G UMTS in the 2100 band, which is not found anywhere in North America. You'd be getting EDGE for data in Canada on Rogers.

Yup 2100 only. If you want 3G (EVDO rev. A) in North America, you'll have to go with a CDMA carrier.
no, the bold is designed to work on north american GSM 3g networks.
The tour is designed to work on 3g CDMA carrires in north amreica, but if unlocked it can work on non-3g GSM. Over sea's you will get 3g on GSM though.
Confused Newb here, does this mean the Bold on Rogers is also not 3G?
Short answer: No. Bold on Rogers is 3G.
Long answer: Bold on Rogers would be UMTS 3G. What we're saying here is that the Tour is a CDMA 3G device that can connect to UMTS 3G, but only on frequencies not found in Canada. Therefore, the Tour cannot use Rogers 3G. Bold can.
I just wish the Tour was a little bigger, don't get me wrong I love the phone and can't wait to get it next month. But I have big freakin hands and love the size of the bold ( a couple of my friends have it, and I nearly jumped carriers to get it!). But I will be able to deal with the size of Tour...Just so I can have a physical keyboard again!
