    so i have turned off the auto dim feature for the backlight in the screen/keyboard settings, but the backlight STILL seems to adjust itself based on the surroundings - what gives?

    and yes, i have battery pulled

    That's not what the auto dim feature is for. There is no way to disable what you are seeing.

    so what does disabling the auto dim in the settings do then?

    I've got the same problem... changing the setting does nothing... when I go into the sun the brightness cranks right up.
