9630 notification issues

My Tour 9630 used to give me notification sounds AND a red star-like icon over the email, for example, so I knew which address I had a new message in or over the applications folder so I knew that I had a notification from Facebook or something like that. All of the sudden it stopped giving me the icon, just the sound now and I have to go to my messages folder to see what the notification is. I hate this and I cannot figure out how to change it back. Can anyone help me with this?

Have you tried a hard pull (take out the battery for a few minutes) yet?

I have tried that. This actually happened a few months ago and I'm just now getting around to trying to get some tips to fix it. I've gone through every setting on my phone. I have no clue how it happened or how to change it back.
