Question Yet another back button problem

I know there have been so many posts on the back button and Blackberry button being unresponsive, however this has be totally confused. I haven't downloaded any apps in months and for no reason the back and Blackberry button are totally unresponsive. I do a battery pull and it works fine for a while and then starts up again. I have no idea what's causing it and it's starting to annoy. Not only that, when I'm typing an e-mail, the keyboard sometimes lags and I have to type very slow and wait for the charachters to display on the screen before typing another letter, again, I've never had this problem before. I've had this phone since the day it was released and it's worked fine since now. Currently I'm running OS 7.1 on Sprint.
Any thoughts??

I too have a BB 9850 and every so often (1 or 2 times/week) my BB and Back buttons appear unresponsive and I used to reboot to clear the issue. A few months ago, I started holding the BB button down to see what apps were open and I would find 10 or more that had been opened and were sucking up my resources. I'm not sure how or why the apps were open, but by closing all the unnecessary ones, my 9850 would return to normal.

Since my BB is running 24/7 it really isn't much of an inconvenience when this occurs and I've managed to take it in stride. Each revision of the operating system seems to clear some issues and then new challenges arise. I'm sure similar issues are found in all the phone designs, but remembering how much these devices can do now as compared to my old Air-Touch cellular brick from 1989, these devices are amazing.

I totally agree, I love the phone and just find this an inconvenience. I don't have any apps open at all and the buttons are still freezing up, that's what I don't understand - why, for no reason, did this start happening?? I've done nothing different for months and it just started acting up.

Well luckily it seems to be just a software issue and not a hardware issue. May a wipe and reinstall of the OS will fix it. I did over the weekend and it made a world of difference to my phone.

Could be applications slowly leaking memory and then you get it on the other side if the security protocol is set to automatically clean the memory.

It is however, almost a tragedy that in 2012, Blackberries STILL require a daily battery pull to operate optimally.

I would love to see Blackberry incorporate a "reboot" function on future OSs instead of having to do a battery pull. I know there are third party apps out there that do it, but IMO, that really should be a BB standard.

I Image you must have an older os as the os on my 9850 never needs a battery pull unless I am deleting an app.

I found this while researching my back button issue. I'm sure that some people here know this, but if they don't I found these tests very helpful...

Go to... Options, Device, Device and Status Information

When the information screen is displayed, call up the keyboard and type "test".

The "Device Self Test" app then opens up.

Click the track pad and hit run test. You can pick which tests to run, or be walked through a guided test session.

This helped to see if the back button and menu key physically work, or if it's a software related issue.

Figured I'd share with others who didn't know this either!

Nice find.

Performed the test. Actually got the esc/menu buttons to cut out midtest... but then I screwed up and accidentally hit the trackpad and got to the homescreen. Without being able to use the menu button, I couldn't get back into the test.

So I had to hit send and menu simultaneously to get them working again and I haven't been able to get them to fail since.

Btw, the convenience key stopped responding when the esc and menu keys stopped.

It seems like a good diagnosing tool. Guess I'm down to uninstalling and reinstalling apps to figure out where the problem lies!! Can't wait, fun!
