Woke up to a dead 9850
I pluged it in last night before I went to bed. Woke up late because the alarm on my phone never went off. Grabed the phone and the screen was black and the led was flash red for about 7 seconds then off for 7 seconds. The phone unresponsive. I thought ok maybe the charge did not take. So I plugged it in for a half hour same result. Each time pulling the battery. So I tried plugging in my PB charger, still no luck. I tried pulling the battery out for 20 minutes nothing. Tried plugging it into the PC, nothing. I even tried to load app loader and follow the bricked instruction. Nothing. Called Verizon and a new one will arrive Tuesday

I am now using a 9650
I want my 9850 back. I never really had anything issues with it until now. Sad day

Tried that with the app loader. It will show me the pin, and even ask for the password I have on it. Then when I click next it says The blackberry Desktop software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that you connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service provider or system administrator.

Desktop manager would open but not connect. It would say device is either rebooting or the battery is bad.

Have you ruled out a total battery failure? I had symptoms similar to yours a couple of weeks ago and it turned out to be a failed battery. Fortunately, I had already bought a backup battery which, when swapped in, revived the phone completely.

Same thing happened to mine 3 days after I got it. I tried all the things you did and finally gave up and went back to Verizon. they took a look and said "you got a bad one." In fact they referred to it as a DOA. They replaced it on the spot. The new one works great and I'm about a month in so far.

Just to elaborate on the issue I had - if I removed the battery and plugged it in, my computer recognized the device (the PIN), and it attempted to install software to it, but it failed when it tried to connect to the JVM (since it wouldn't actually start up). I tried putting the battery back in at that time, but all that did was make the device continuously restart (without showing anything on the screen - just the red LED being on, then off, and back on, ...). I'm pretty sure its just the battery but I didn't have an extra one, and Verizon is apparently just replacing the whole thing. I'd rather have them just send me a new battery first, since I'll need to reinstall all the apps I had. I just pulled off the files on the micro SD card using a reader.
I'm wondering if I should get a spare battery anyway - some are on line for $24.
Not sure if it could have been the cause, but I have been using the USB charger from my PlayBook, which charges more than the Storm. I kept the one that came with my Torch in my laptop bag. So maybe that damaged the battery from using that every night instead of the one that came with it... - 10-10-2011, 09:16 PM #17
I doubt the charger was the problem. I had a defective JM-1 battery that had to be replaced by Verizon, and I had never recharged it using anything other than the OEM 9850 charging cradle. There simply are a LOT of defective JM-1 batteries in circulation. I highly recommend that users of phones with this battery get a backup battery ASAP. You (unfortunately) may need it sooner than you think!

wow...my phone just did the same....earlier this evening, it rebooted itself once...and now, it's not coming back on....I took the battery off and plugged it in to my computer, and it only showed a picture of battery not installed....put the battery back in and LED would light up for several seconds, then off...then on again....each time the LED came on, it would trigger a device on my computer, then when the LED went off, it disconnected from my PC....and it kept doing that...

Jeeze, I'm sorry this is happening guys...
I love how plastic tends to carry more static than glass can, making touch even more sensitive... and more annoying to deal with. My finger would be hoving over an item, not touching anything and the phone goes spastic.
Sometimes I REALLY miss my 9550...
