Will the Torch 9850 come to Verizon and if so WHEN??
Hey guys,
I know there are other post with this question but since Sprint and At@T released there Torches the 21st, I would imagine Verizon should be doing the same ASAP. I am due for an upgrade at the end of August and NEED to upgrade my Storm 2. I want the 9850 so bad but all the forums are saying contradictory things some say it is coming out other say its not some say its going to be released this week others say October. Can anyone give me any information they have about this. It would make me so pissed off if Verizon doesn't release this phone this week. I would love to switch carriers if this is the case but I would get F***ed with the termination fee and then going off the family share to my own account which would double the price of what I pay now. I hate US carriers with a passion its such BS they block the 9900s NFC and don't give any information to there customers about things like this so you can make a decision. Please someone that works for Verizon let me know!!! - 08-22-2011, 01:24 PM #3
I don't think anyone has any word on whether this device will be going to VZ. There are TONS of people on here that are hoping it does.
I really want this device. My company only offers AT&T and VZW devices. I don't see myself as switching to AT&T becuase the service in NYC is very poor (dropped calls, etc), though the idea of being able to be on the web while on the phone is nice. - 08-22-2011, 01:27 PM #4
I talked to a Verizon Sales rep yesterday who told me that he had heard rumors that it will be carried by Verizon, but he didn't know when it would be released. He didn't even want to confirm that it was coming because he said what he knew was only rumored.
On the other hand, I called a local Verizon store last week and they said it was coming very soon.
I am thinking that Sept. 1st might be the drop date, but if they are wanting to sell it online 10 days before the in store date (like they did the bold touch), they missed that mark at midnight last night. But I will probably wait until Sept. 1st, if it's not out, or nothing definite is being said about the release, I am either going to the another carrier or going the 9930.
Ever since the Bold 9930 came out, everyone except the Verizon Torch 9850 waiters, have been in complete bliss since they have their phones, now it's our turn. I just wish that something would get leaked.... it's the not knowing that it making me mad at Verizon. - 08-22-2011, 02:30 PM #6
I was going to get that model too, but I have to tell you - the 9930 is sick - the screen is gorgeous - the keyboard is amazing!! Amazing device!!

Anyone thinking of buying the 9850 from verizon. Go into sprint today to see if you like it. You might be disapointed. The screen in very narrow. The portrait typing is almost impossible. The body feels like plastic and it will not be NFC compatable. Not to totally knock it. The landscape typing was very cool and easy to use. Also seemed like the internet was slightly faster than the 9930. Also the camera had autofocus.

As i said in a review that I wrote afte using the device for 5 minutes, I agree with you that the screen is definitely more narrow than I anticipated. Due to that, the keys on the virtual keyboard, when held in portrait, are closer together, thus making it slightly more difficult to type when compared to the Storm series. I certainly will nt say that its "almost impossibel" as 'thedeadberry' noted above. I will say that it will take time to get used to, as would any person moving from a physical keyboard to a virtual keyboard. or, you coud go the other way in that it would take time for me to switch from my Storm to a Bold becuase I havne't used a physical keyboard in 3 years.
You need to understand that if you've never used a touch screen device, you will not be able to pick up the device on minute one and type as you didn on your previous, physical keyboard device. After one week you will see a MAJOR improvement, and sooner or later, you will be typing just as fast, if not faster than people with the Bold. - 08-22-2011, 03:43 PM #11Sent from my Atari 2600, in the back of my van, down by the river...

Is NFC that big of a concern?
Also I didn't think the 9850 felt that bad. it did feel a little "cheaper" than the 9930, but it also costs less

This looks really old though. Doesn't have the raised buttons. Pictured next to the Xperia Play which has been out a while. - 08-23-2011, 07:50 AM #15
Not sure what this is worth
Just of phone with VZW rep. Was checking contract end date, have been thinking Sprint to get the Torch. The rep asked why I was asking, was straight up and said I wanted the 9850 and yada yada. The rep. replied, "You will get what want, Labor Day is coming around the corner. Just hang in there." So Im going to "hang in there" as stated. Like I said, not sure what its worth, but Im CHOOSING to read between the lines. LOL

Thanks everyone for the input, at least it is somewhat calming to know that so many people think it will be coming out and soon. Like every one said I just wish it was soon. Like smarkow said I haven't used a real keyboard in over 4 years and when I do pick up a real keyboard i'm lost because i'm so used to the storm 1 and then Storm 2 keyboard. NFC isn't TOO concerning to me since Verizon blocked it on the Bold anyway. Plus there isn't much to do with NFC as of YET. I can wait for the next RIM QNX super phone for that. All in all the 9850 is the phone I want and I'm stuck waiting for Verizon to announce anything. SCREW YOU VERIZON!!!

NFC is available on Verizon Bold 9930 with the leaked .340 OS.

Oh I know the leaked OS it will work. I'm just proving that Verizon sucks. Plus really what can you use NFC for right now?
- 08-23-2011, 11:56 AM #22
Near Field Communication.... it can be used for stuff like payments and such.

Man, what a Jack A$$! Sure he could google it and come up with things like....National Football Conf, Nirvana Fan Club, NFC.usda.gov, as well as others. I just don't know why people have to be so mean. Remember, presentation is everyting. Sure all you want is to empower this fella to do his due diligence so he is not first of all asking a "stupid" question (which he noted) or taking up someone elses time by asking something that he could easily find out on his own. Now the problem, your presentation was horrible.....that is unless you worked in a prison or the like. The time it took you to reply could have been done in much more of a constructive manner. I digress.

I got the 9930 (had the storm 1 and Storm 2 in the past). So far I like the 9930 but I have time to return it and wait for the Torch 9850. NFC is nice but I don't see it as a deal breaker for me, I am still trying to decide between the larger screen and no qwerty keyboard and small screen with keyboard.
Of course as everyone is asking . . . when and that is my biggest issue. I sold my Droid 3 for the 9930 and with that if I return my 9930 I lose my unlimited data, but that may or may not be a big issue since I rarely use more than a gig or so a month. Still its an issue.Twitter: RaptorOO7
I tried to remember my mobile device history and realized I have had way too many to remember them all. - 08-23-2011, 01:17 PM #25
Why would you lose your unlimited data plan? The unlimited package is grandfathered as long as you keep a smartphone on that line. Exchanging a 9930 for a 9850 should not cause your data plan to change.
Gotta love the BB and data drain, huh? I have five BlackBerry lines with unlimited data, and our usage the last six months has been less than 400MB per month with no WiFi enabled. We don't need it.
