Default Thinking of hopping onto Torch, how is its battery life?

I have owned several BB for severals years now. The latest one is the 9900 Bold. You guys might have heard, the battery life on that phone is terrible. Max 7 hours currently for me under avg usage. Have had tried all the OS (released or leaked); latest OS 7.1 only provides marginally better battery performance (15+% per hour drain rate on the avg).

I have so few apps on the phone now it is almost embarassing for a smart phone. I mainly have whatsapp, which i mske sure i exit out of pretty much after each entry. I have no apps running in the background except the forced-in BBM apps which i couldnt delete. BTW i have switched out 3 phones under warranty by RIM repair center because they are too lazy to do any troubleshooting.

Anyway. I might be able to talk the carrier into letting me switch to Torch 9860 (the only other BB Taiwan Mobile carries). So I would appreciate all of your help in letting me know if the battery issue on the Touch is as wide spread as the 9900's.

Thsnk you very much!!

From my experience with the 9860, battery life is good and I have no complaints (I know many have had issues). Most days I have medium to heavy usage and it lasts me from morning through to evening when I put it back on the charger around 7PM, so roughly 12 hours. Yesterday on the other hand was kind of a low usage day, a couple of phone calls, a few texts and bbms, some browsing and my battery lasted almost 24 hours with out being charged.

Not as good as my Bold 9930. I could go easily a whole day and more with the Bold. If I use my 9850 a lot I usually have to charge it in the evening once. To be expected since it is the same exact hardware internally far as I know far as processing and memory; yet has a larger screen.

I can (and often do) go a full 24 hours on my Torch battery. At night -- my phone is my alarm -- I turn off bluetooth, but other than that I take no special precautions to prolong battery life.

The Bold should have better battery life because of its smaller screen. From my experience, I'd say the Torch 9850/60 has a good battery life, not great. Mine lasts, on average, about 18 hours. In a daily prespective, I BBM a lot, and I mean A LOT! .. Few texts, and a minute or two of phone calls. And also some emails here and there. Yes, I use Facebook and Twitter, but I set their automatic updates to off (recommended!). They automatically update the feeds when you open up the app. I also have a weather app that updates every 3 hours. I browse, I don't watch or stream videos online, however. And I use BlackBerry News just about every morning on the way to school.

And another big thing, use WiFi whenever/wherever possible. This actually saves you battery life. If there's no wireless internet around, then turn it off. Also, turn off Bluetooth when not in use. Also set the display brightness to 10%, trust me, that's bright enough.

All my bells/whistles are off.. Only on 2G+3G. Screen lowest setting, going off in 20 second, no auto dim, etc. Have gone through everything.

Now, any of you are on Whatsapp? That and web serving does eat up battery life I think therefore I want to get a reference.

In independent test of using Whatsapp for a solid hour alone, the batt drain rate is 20+% an hour. That's crazy.

Talking on the phone for an hour (GSM) solidly would eat up 13% to 15% an hour

Idle is approx 1.3% an hour on the avg.

As I do a bit more research on 9860 the more I think it will have similar batt life as 9900 Bold. Since part of the issue on the 9900 is caused by the OS's battery management logic and since 9900 and 9800 are on same 7.1 platform (I think) and also that 9860 has even larger screen then therefore I should expect much longer life out of the battery. If all things being equal, 9860 should have even shorter life.

I have good battery life too. 6hrs of totally websurfing will drain it. Other wise I get good battery service. 1 thing that eats my battery is if I'm in the field where its not 3-4g and it keeps searching. I found if I lock it on 2g it.doesn't drain my battery.

It will depend on how you use it. I do have the free battery booster app on mine and I guess it helps a little. During light use, mine goes about 24 hrs. However, the days that I use tune-in and tether my playbook it will cut down to about 18 hrs.

I set the light to the lowest. Facebook and ubersocial still live. BBM used a lot. No call, I'm using another phone to SMS and phone call. Browsing, quite a lot. With opera mini, browser, and individual launcher.
Charging twice daily. Quickpull reset every morning.
The longer I use this 9860, the longer battery stay alive. I heard some smartphones' battery need some weeks to get stable condition. Still, 9860/9850 need more than 1230 mAh to survive in a day.
