Problems with new 9850
Hi Everyone,
I just got the BB Torch 9850 last week. I have a Storm2 9550 on another line now. I tried the HTC Trophy with Win Phone, but it couldn't handle the basics well (no sync with Outlook???)
I am having some issues and hoping you all might be able to advise.
It has the os that came with it, I have not updated it - 7.1 bundle457 (v7.1.0.163, platform 5.1.0.137).
1) The phone is great when it works, it is much faster than the Storm2, but I have had times when it freezes up for about 10+ seconds and I can't do anything with it. Sometimes I see the spinning clock, sometimes I don't.
2) Another problem is sometimes the touchscreen stops working, but I know the phone hasn't frozen as in the problem above, because the touchpad still works and I can use the phone with that. If the touchscreen stops working in an app, just pressing the back button and exiting the app gets the touchscreen working again, but if the touchscreen stops working in the OS areas, I have to reboot the phone to get it working again.
3) The battery is draining much quicker than my Storm2 did, but that may just be because I am using it a lot since I just got it. However I have noticed it lasts a long time when talking on the phone. Doing data related stuff with the screen on depletes the battery pretty quickly. I have noticed a lot of people complaining about os7.1 draining the battery rapidly here in the forums.
4) The pics app suck, unless I am missing something. It just presents all the pics rather than showing the folders they are in and the directory structure. This makes finding a particular pic almost impossible. I have found a workaround in the FILES app, though.
So my question is, is there a good os version that resolves the first three issues?
Thanks! - 04-25-2012, 10:07 PM #2
I'd security wipe it and reinstall a new OS image. Start fresh with a stock OS and see if the freezes stop. If not exchange it. That is not normal.

upgrading to the current official OS will be a big help. I've heard good things about the latest leak as well, .402. I haven't had a chance to use that one, though
I agree with you on the silly way the pictures folders are handled. It started with OS6. If you notice, though, you do get separate folders displayed for anything in the media card>blackberry>pictures folder. Any subfolder from there are separated only with a heading while viewing that particular folder. I know my explanation is horrible, but I hope it helps you figure out how to best manage your pictures. If you need a better explanation, let me know.
Like I said, upgrading the OS will likely take care of problems 1-3. If you need help with that, let us know. The battery will still drain a little quicker than your 9550, but you should get at least 24-48 hours normal use on a charge. Don't forget, your phone is capable of so much more in a much faster way. Unfortunately, we need to sacrifice a little battery life. But to me it's a good trade.
Cheers. Enjoy your 9850. it's an awesome phone. - 04-26-2012, 03:58 PM

Oh, I remembered one more thing that is giving me issues:
The CALL LOG doesn't display most of the time, it just shows the CONTACTS list.
Really annoying - 04-26-2012, 09:29 PM #9

I've noticed all three of your first problems from one OS or another. I'm three OSes ahead of you, but if I remember right, 163 was one of them. They were more interested in getting Hotspot released, than making sure the OS worked right.
Sometimes, when the touchscreen freezes, you can hit the screen lock a couple times to get it working again. I always decided it was time for a battery pull, which is annoying.
The freezing for a few seconds really sucked. It seems to be solved in the latest update. I'll wait and see.
If your phone is still new, give it until about 5 or 6 charge cycles to really see what the battery can do. Use Wifi if possible, but keep it turned off, if not using it. I can't go a whole day without charging it, with moderate use. - 04-27-2012, 05:27 AM #11
Use something like BBOS to shrink the extra languages and stuff before loading makes a huge difference.

.342 was a pretty good OS. I just came off it yesterday to try out .402. .342 is official from US Cellular, I believe, but you can still install it on your vzw phone. There are threads here that will walk you through that; but if you have questions, I'm happy to help.
Not sure what .402 brings to the table over .342. I only installed it after work last night. but I haven't had any problems with it yet. Some people say typing is improved, but I haven't had to bang out any emails yet.
I don't think that's correct. That might be how non-full touch phones are laid out.
To toggle among dial, call log, and contacts, there are three tabs toward the top. Select the tabs to go to the corresponding screen. You can change which screen the phone app opens up to. Go to phone>options>call logs & lists. Initial view has your options available.
Hope that helps. - 04-27-2012, 06:58 PM

Hi everyone,
I wiped my phone and loaded 342 on it and it has been working great! I love it! It is way faster and better than my old Storm2. Though I do miss the clicky screen, I seem to type more accurately on the Storm2 than the 9850.
Over the past two weeks, I have not noticed any of the major problems I posted.
The pics app still sucks, but I use the files app to navigate to the folder I want and find my pics that way and it works well.
However, I do still have the problem where the call log tab shows the contacts instead of the call log, though it is happening less frequently. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Everything else has been working great! I haven't loaded many apps yet, I thought I would do that slowly, maybe one per week.
Thanks for all your help! - 05-16-2012, 01:20 PM #17
I too am coming from a storm 2 and agree that the 9850 is much faster. But that's the only thing that is better about this phone. Typing sucks compared to the storm. I have way mor typo's. And the space button has a mind of its own. I love he speed but hate typing on this. I've been using the 9850 for two months now and just can't stand to type on this. I might just go back to the 9550.

402 was a little wonky at first. I removed BBM (no one I know is on it) and its been the most stable/useable one I have tried yet of the 7.1s.
