just loaded this os, downgrades bbm and bbmaps to lower versions than .340 for some reason...bbm isn't a big deal, just upgraded in app world! bbmaps, however, you have to go to blackberry.com and when I click the download link it says bbmaps isn't available for this device...strange! anyway, overall os size seems about the same as .340, the camera folder glitch is gone too! I had awesome reception and signal strength with .340 so far it seems pretty equal on that aspect, will have to see over the next couple of days to be sure about that and battery life! reboot is quick, just as quick as .340! so far doesn't seem like much is different between .340 and .342, that small of a build difference I wasn't expecting any real difference, my guess is small glitch fixes! Also, the media server option isn't in the network options of this build, it's back in the media options

I had US Cellular update mine at the store and I've got the device analyzer. Look under the OPTIONS menu then click on DEVICE and finally ADVANCED SYSTEM SETTINGS is where it is located.

After a few days use I've noticed battery life is about the same, browser seems faster, and I think reception is better. The Mobile Hotspot and Media Server make this phone much nicer to use. Also noticed we now have Emergency Alert messages on homescreen.

OS 7.1.0.342 from U.S. Cellular available
I downloaded from us cellular, did some shrinking with bbh, and loaded with apploader....no need to wipe, apploader/dtm wipe the phone for you before it loads the new os
emergency alert messages have been in every 7.1 build I've loaded on my 9850's or 9930
did you review everything, make sure it was checked off in the application loader screen prior to installing...if you didn't shrink it out, I'm guessing you didn't check it off to be installed

I figured it out. I re-downloaded the image from the BB US Cellular carrier site. The first one I downloaded must have been corrupted or something. The Device Analyzer and Battery Saving Mode are now present. Thanks for the help everyone.

I installed this OS from the BB site using DM, and I am bitterly regretting it.
1. The main reason I upgraded was to try to get rid of the omnipresent little clock. It didn't help.
2. I can no longer delete sent Emails from my BB, even using Gmail on my PC. They appear stuck on my BB in perpetuity. Multiple efforts at rebooting and battery pulls have not helped.
3. I can no longer play music for more than 2-4 songs. I usually shuffle the songs from my playlist and just let them play. Now the player stops after several songs. Sometimes I can get it to restart by toggling back and forth between the previous and next song, but usually it requires a battery pull to resolve.
So...it didn't solve the main problem I wanted fixed, and it screwed up the 2 functions I most use. Just shoot me. - 04-09-2012, 10:12 AM #41
The sent emails remaining are likely a result of the mail settings between handheld and mailbox. Make sure device wins on conflict. (This is where carrier support should be able to help you.)
I experience the occassional music pause as well. Happens near the end of the 2nd or 3rd song. Hit stop and rewind or foward to the next song. In worst case just close the media player. This is different from the media player busy error which since .340 happens less frequently, but still happens without reporting it as such. Very frustrating. the 9850/9860 is suppossed to be RIM's media centric Flagship BB. ANd they still can't get playback right. Funny how after more than 3 years of this type of failure people are hanging their hopes that all of a sudden BB10 will be perfect.
Finally as to the hour glass, if this is a non stop thing, it points to either a corrupt process or database. My suggestion in either case is do a full JLCmnder wipe and the a JL Cmnder restore to factory settings. Then wipe all OSes from the computer. redownload and install the OS and skip DM and load the OS direct from the loader, or better yet use a shrinking tool and get rid of everything you don't need and load from the shrinking tool.
Good luck.
PS in worst case, if you're not on BES, consider Android. My wife and son have them and they just kick my BES locked BB 9850's as- all over the map.Ad Lucem

Absolutely, Nothing to do with being locked down. I'll give you just one quick point of fact because I am actually pretty busy right now. I upgraded my son from a Droid Incredible to a Droid 2 on Friday. I took his old incredible to play with on Sat. I was out in the afternoon and threw on the MLB app on the BB to listen to the game. It worked fine, but decided to take a look at what the Incredible a 2+ year old device could do. Just using the browser, on the full flash MLB site was, well...incredible. On the BB - it had a tiny rectangle on the upper right corner with a cruddy icon representing the batter, and the occassional pitch would show up as a dot on the screen. With the Incredible I had the full Gameday experience with a fully realized stadium and live pitches. I logged in to my MLB account and had the audio, which by the way was properly synched to the action. The incredible is 2 years older than the 9850 and has the same dimensions and nearly the same CPU/RAM, but handles it's tasks much quicker. As for POP e-mail it was coming as fast, or faster than my BB. And typing was so much better and more intuitive. If I was not on BES, I would activate the DI for me. Most of our new associates and partners now use their I-phones as their corporate device. I have not heard a soul complain. Android, is still not allowed on our system because of device encryption issues. But that should be solved by this summer.

Fair enough but we know bbos does not support flash and neither does iOS. Yep they have the apps that many want (not need) that make up for things.
I know I'm different and I don't need a dedicated NBA app to get the things I want about the NBA and my team. I listen to the games I want to via tunein radio and find all the info I want. Not that apps like a photo editor for people who want to edit their photos isn't wanted or needed.Sent from me using my fingers. Be pantless in 5K. Febreze - for more than smells.

This thread is for findings and fixings and not the place to describe the differences between platforms. My point stands, that the media player is way jarred up in this OSe as it is in each of the latest 7.1 OSes on the latest BB devices.

Installed 342. It does fix the scolling images issue.
Media works fine. Worked in 340 as well. I use it all the time
and for 30 - 60 minutes without any issues. So far.
Gained another 5 - 8 megs of mem over 340, which I gained about 10 megs with.
After 3 hours on 342 I am at 176.5 mb. Thats down a little from 180.2 when rebooted.
I used the loader.exe to install it. I sometimes think many of the problems folks
have is when they use DM instead of loader.exe.
So far so good for me. (and for the record, my 9850 does not freeze!)

So you're still loosing 1+ megs an hour.
The media player issue is well documented. You do have it, whether it has of yet appeared to you is a different story. Your .342 OS is not different from anyone else's (.342 OS). The issue has to do with how RIM has coded the Device Media Processor to share resources. On occassion it will get caught in an unrecoverable loop. As is the case with any Java programming, sometimes the issue is easily reproducable. Other times it is not. - 04-09-2012, 03:19 PM #49
Thanks, but the Email suggestion didn't work. Still can't delete sent Emails from the phone.
I am really aggravated by the Media player issue because I didn't have this problem with 2 previous OS. This is ridiculous to have to keep toggling back and forth, turning apps off, the device off, or pull a battery just to play a song.
Unfortunately, I'd love to try Android but I absolutely have to be able to synch my phone to MS Outlook on my laptop, and I cannot find a single Android app that will perform that function reliably. Every review and solution I've seen requires multiple apps of unsatisfactory reliability.

I don't have media player issues on any of the 9850's running this os in my house, in fact the last time I had any media playing problems was in .163
videos and/or music for an hour or two each day, and one of them is playing music all night long every night without a problem, then the alarm on it goes off in the morning as well without causing any hang ups, once the alarm is canceled it continues with the song right where it left off
I did some shrinking and loaded with apploader on all 3 of them....220-230mb on reboot on all 3, on the one I'm using its 223mb, down to 188mb since last reboot 47hrs ago so losing roughly .75mb per hour
