Unhappy Major issues with Torch 9860

Hi All,

I am new to the forum and i have been facing problems with my new torch ever since i got it. first i want to say that its a great phone and once the issues go away i am sure i am really going to enjoy it.

I got this phone as a gift, my brother got it from China. i am located in Pakistan and the carrier i am using is UFONE. when i first opened the box and put in the SIM, everything worked fine like a blaze, i had EDGE, i got the message that your handset has been registered with the wireless network, host routing table entries everything was great, but that was short lived as i connected the phone to DTM and found an OS update my carrier supported. Hence i upgraded, and ever since its now edge and host routing table entries are empty. i have tried everything from hard reboots to down grading OS, checking data services, everything, but the issues still persists. i have tried contacting my service provider and they are clueless too. i have googled and searched crackberry as well but to no avail. when i open the email setup app it goes to BES activation even though i dont have a BES account, i cant go to regular email setup ex. gmail, hotmail etc etc. The handset is unlocked and everything else works perfectly.
current OS version is 7.0 bundle 2406 (v7.0.0.585, platform 5.0.0.734). this is the latest OS version supported by my carrier.

my questions are 1) is there something wrong with my phone (NOT fixable) ? 2) how can i, if at all, resolve this issue? 3) is there any way to contact RIM tech directly ? 4) is there anyway i can force install the HRT using my computer ? 5) if i install a leaked OS will it work with my carrier ? 6) is it possible that DATA services are locked on my handset ?

any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Saud

just to make sure , you do have a blackberry plan right?

try resending the service books. i had this problem with my old storm 2 as well. if that doesnt work you can ask your service provider to reset your blackberry account on their end (not sure if thats what they call it). or you can log into the site [carriername.blackberry.com] and see if you can reset things yourself.

to resend service books from the phone, go to options, device, advanced system settings and then host routing table. then press the blackberry key and choose register now

i dont think its a hardware problem, or problem with it being locked. when blackberries are unlocked, their are unlocked forever, a upgrade cant make it locked up

Hey Silverfern,

First of all thanks a lot for your reply.

yes i do have a activated BIS plan. i tried resending the service books but to no avail. the service provider has even reset the BB account on their end. the thing is the HRT is empty (no entries) and it doesnt change no matter what i do. the service and sim are working perfectly as i also have a BB 9000 and the sim is working perfectly in it.

also when i try to reset things myself OR even try to make a new ID on the site [carriername.blackberry.com] i get an error unable to find device. the provider tried doing the same using my PIN and IMEI but werent able to achieve anything, they say the handset is at fault and the services are fine.

the reason why i am concerned is because everything working fine the first time i put in a SIM, after the update it just doesnt go to EDGE :S and the HRT is empty ever since.

the tech team of my provider said that i go have it checked locally to have the "Data Services" unlocked but i doubt thats the issue, could you please advise regarding this?

other than this i am pretty much out of options, short of selling the phone locally which i really dont want to do .

Thank you,

Saud

have you tried clearing the service books/HRT from desktop manager? after you do that, you do have do a battery pull, and then ask your provider to reset on their end. after they reset it, you should do batttery pull again. Also, have you tried a wipe to restore to default factory setting?

try: delete servicebook/HRT -> battery pull -> call up your provider for rest -> pull again -> go to options and resend the books

try: security wipe

I'm not sure this will help. But if you have desktop software manager and BBSAK, you may download a software in any carrier, instal it on your PC, wipe your device with BBSAK, let it error, and renew your device with the software that you've been downloaded and installed via deskop manager.
Don't forget to delete the vendor.xml too.

Hey OP, a sure way to rule out the hardware is to try your SIM in a different BB device. Not sure if you have one available, but if not you can ask a friend on your carrier. It does not have to be the same model.

Good Luck!

Sounds like the OP choose BES when setting up email? That wouldn't effect the data connection though? Where would BES come from if the user didn't choose it?

One of my issues with my Torch 9860 is the battery drain and it feels warm. I would be lucky if I last a full day without have to charge the battery.

Again Thanks a lot every1 for your help, especially Silverfern.

Yes, i have tried everything you have suggested (exactly like you have suggested ) but that didnt resolve the issue. i have also tried the factory reset to no avail.

As for the SIM suggestion, yes i have a bold 9000 too and the sim works perfectly fine in it. so far so i even factory reset the bb 9000 wiped everything off it then tried the SIM and it worked great without any issues.

Silverfern,
I went to a local shop here in my city, and the tech guy over there after looking at my phone for 15-20 mins said that the PIN is blocked from the RIM server and we cant do anything about it and neither can your provider. So my question is this a possibility ? IF so how ? as i brought the phone brand new, i have the purchase receipt the box and all the accessories. Sounded strange to me. never the less he said the only way to fix this is to ask the guys over at RIM. Now my second is is there any way to contact the guys at RIM so that i can put in a request for them to fix this for me if at all possible.

Thank you all again for your replies, suggestions and help.

Saud

you can check if you IMEI number is clean, it sounds like your IMEI numbe got reported as stolen when you were upgrading the phone (i also just upgraded my phone, to 7.1 this time, was fine after the update). Did he say something about the IMEI? because i dont think your phone can be blocked just with the BB pin

Try and disable the APN settings. They may have been set to the carrier of the OS you installed. This was always an issue with my S2 unlocked.

From your homescreen do a universal search for APN and just uncheck everything. Then reboot and hopefully you'll be registered to the network again :-)
