    Default Cockamamie Occurrence

    Hi,

    I bought a new unlocked Torch 9860. Well, it is for my dad.

    Now honest I know quite a lot about phones, especially BlackBerry. Not trying to sound arrogant. Just sayin'...this has been a weird day.

    The company that sold it is a reputable entity selling on eBay. They promised us that the phone was 1,4,8 bands in the about screen. We use T-Mobile so that is paramount.

    We get the phone today...I boot it up and it says Telus. Oh crap in a basket. Telus is 1,2,5,6 model.

    Yet to my shock about screen says 1,4,8.

    It gets weirder...

    We put our SIM card in and it behaves like a 1,2,5,6 device. Searches for network, finds GSM first, then goes to EDGE only.

    Not to mention despite being new the OS is corrupt as it would only stay on for 10 seconds before hard powering down and requiring a battery pull.

    I tried some BDM troubleshooting but I stopped and asked for a full refund and got it. Not even paying return shipping.

    I'm more curious as to what in the dickens happened here?

    Firmware that reports 1,4,8 yet is Telus branded and operates as if it had 1,2,5,6?

    Cockamamie, just cockamamie I say!

    Very weird.

    I assume it was a Telus device unlocked, and that the company selling it was ignorant of the different bands.
    Or they might have tried to adjust the settings, but you can't.

    Couldn't get more specific without one in hand.

    Still, the good news is the happy ending: you got your money back.

    Is it possible to crack the firmware to show 148 when it really is a 1256 device?

    And I am correct in understanding that Telus is a Canadian carrier that uses 1256 devices aka 91LW for Z10 just like Bell, Rogers, Fido, and AT&T here in the US?

    The model should be on the sticker with the MEID info under the battery.
    Torch 9860:
    RDQ71UW = 1 - 4 - 8
    RDP71UW = 1 - 2 - 5 - 6

    If you still have the phone, check that label and see if what is says.

    Also, get your Vender ID via the Engineering screen. Compare to this list:
    FAQ: Complete BlackBerry Vendor ID List Compared With Carrier Names - BerryReview

    To access the Engineering screen:
    At the Home screen, press and hold the Back button, hold the phone in Portrait orientation.
    Tap the top left, then top right of the touch screen (this will cause the Manage Connections screen to slide down and back up) keep repeating this until the "Help Me" Engineering screen appears. It should only take 4 taps.
    Vender ID will be the first item listed. To exit Help Me, press Back. Don't mess around in the Engineering section unless you know what you are doing, as you can easily destroy the phone.

    If your hardware is correct for your carrier, then check to make sure Options/Network and Connections/Mobile Network/Network Technology is set to look for the correct type of network.

    I honestly don't know. I didn't think so before this thread.
    I wasn't sure it might be possible to bed it this in escreens, but you can't change the actual bands the device uses.

    Yes, Telus and Bell were both CDMA carriers like Verizon or Sprint, then jointly built an HSPA+/LTE network across Canada 4 years ago. Sasktel shares it with them too.
