Boy was I wrong. The new Torch is one sleek device!
I still am leaning towards the 9930 since I'm a keyboard kind of guy, but damn, the 9850 is sleek looking! Those curves!
It actually made the Android phones look somewhat clunky looking.
The metal battery door really makes the thing feel solid in your hand. Solid and quality device feel for sure.
Maybe I'll just forget both the 9930 and 9850 are world phones, buy BOTH and use one for home and the other for travel. I want one of each.

It is definitely sleek! I was just turned off by the idea of a plastic screen, and the fact that I fell in love with the keyboard and the 9930's look. 9850/60 IS sleek, but in my personal preference the 9930 is sleeker. Its more 'me' I guess haha.
Plus, my iPod Touch 4th gen and iPad kinda cover all of my touchscreen desire, and the 9930 has an awesome screen. Its wider than the other touch devices, just not as tall, which hasn't effected me negatively.
I must say if you are a touch only person and like Blackberry this device is a must have. Seems like it will really be RIM's flagship touch device until the QNX superphone comes out.
And on your point about Android, most of the lower end Android devices really are made with cheap build quality, and they definitely look that way. And the bigger, high-end android devices are just TOO big... definitely 'clunky' as you put it, especially the slide-out keyboard ones... (and those landscape keyboards are really difficult to type on anyways! My mom has a Droid2 and uses the touchscreen to type(and the D2 was the first device of any kind that she used with a touch screen).~SaMaster14 - 08-23-2011, 03:47 AM #3

Yeah, I couldn't tell typing on it that it was plastic vs. the glass on my S1. I think any S1/S2 owner will be happy with the 9850. I know I can't wait for vzw to release it!

Wait the screen is plastic, I enjoyed my S1/S2 in the past and those screens were not plastic so why is RIM trying to cheap out? Why is Verizon taking a touch phone with physical buttons when they should have the one with capacitive buttons.

No one knows why they decided on plastic instead of glass. I'm sure its cheaper than the glass.
I will say that the phone is very light when compared to my Storm1. I didnt feel like i would break the phone either. Seems very well built. Its kind of like when I hold a Curve, i'm always amazed at how light the device is. I feel the same way about this device.
The plastic worked just fine and I had no issues. The thought never would have crossed my mind had I not known that it was plastic and not glass. As long as it works properly, which it does, its a non-issue in my book.
Regarding the buttons - where have you been? This has been discussed over and over and over and over in tihs forum probably 1,000 times. Some are for it, some are against it.
having used the Storm2, i occasionally had times where the capacitive buttons did not work. So, for me, i'm fine with the buttons. Its all personal preference.Thanked by:glassofpinot (08-26-2011)

plastic buttons so the screen can wrap around like it does as opposed to glass.

Thanks for the feedback. I have been in the Android world for about 18 months and decided to come back for the Bold 9930. I am pretty happy with the phone, love the keyboard, but as always is a tough choice when you want a bigger screen WITH a keyboard as well. I liked the storm 1 and storm 2 but I only have a few days left before I must ship this back to Verizon if I decide to go with the Torch 9850. I don't fear the lack of glass on the Torch 9850 I always use a screen protector whether others do or not. I do agree so long as the device works that is what I care about.
Oh and yeah I did note some threads but I only started reading up again in the last few weeks so I missed out on the plastic screen gate.Twitter: RaptorOO7

Im only hoping that the screen will not scratch. Ive always used a protector on my S1 & S2. A screen protector might detract from the sleek look. It has no edge beggining and end like the storms screen. It just sweeps from end to end. Maybe a extreme gaurd skin might help! Just a thought!

No matter what things are made of they will always be susceptible to scratches, even Gorilla Glass scratches. Still the seemless screen design is a nice departure from the S1 & S2 era.

The old Palm Centros had a permanent screen protectors on the screen.
I didn't even noticed it was there.

the screen is suppose to make it light wieght. girlfriend just picked one up from sprint and i picked up the 9930. i notice the screen wont sctrach that easy. its suppose to be scratch resistant as well. its very nice if anything. very light compared to my storm 2 and the torch 9800. its fast and the screen display is amazing on the bold and the torch 9850.

I have to agree, glass vs plastic isn't as critical to me so long as the screen is responsive to my touch. I am curious though how RIM was able to get a plastic touch screen to be so responsive and work so well and why others aren't going to same route.
